@Robert - the site is still being defined. I think discussing recipes, or asking how to prepare something can be acceptable for this site (though not the "what is best recipe for" kind of questions, which would be subjective). Such questions are going to come anyway, and closing them will most likely drive people away. Because like you say "ok, so it's a cooking Q&A site, but I can't discuss recipes?". If looking for a cooking site, I would go away. – Gnoupi Jun 2 '10 at 9:06

My cooking is "mean", as in cruel. – Shog9♦ Jun 3 '10 at 2:13

It's great that the site is aimed at chefs or professionals, but I think we'll have a hard time explaining to people visiting the site that their question is to basic. You still have to master the basics to be a pro. Why not have the SO attitude of 'no question is too basic'? – Ivo Flipse Jun 3 '10 at 6:37

How to make the perfect fudge? I typically end up with something of the wrong consistency.

I'm not sure about this one - it's thematically on-topic but "wrong consistency" with food is a bit like "doesn't work" in programming/IT (NARQ). Or maybe that was what you were getting at? – Aaronaught Jun 3 '10 at 15:03

@Aaronaught: well, I would the question body would expand on "wrong consistency" with details (or even pictures...) But, "perfect fudge" rubs me the wrong way - different people like different consistencies. Perhaps a question like, "My fudge comes out too grainy - what should I do differently?" or "How can I make a smooth, consistent fudge?" would be better... OTOH, "What's the proper technique for packing fudge" is probably best avoided. – Shog9♦ Jun 3 '10 at 15:17

@Shog9: Do you have something against fudge-packers? – Aaronaught Jun 3 '10 at 15:51

Are knives made from Damascus Steel more prone to rusting?

Isn't this a question we could expect to get asked? Assuming so, is its problem that it's obviously on-topic, but not exemplary? Or, is it so off-topic that it's not helpful? I actually submitted it because it seemed near the line, so I'm just curious. – Jaydles♦ Jun 5 '10 at 19:28
This isn't directly about food and/or cooking. Perhaps it would be appropriate for meta.food-and-cooking.stackexchange.com? – raven Jun 12 '10 at 18:30
Two questions in the top 20 "on-topic" questions are about knives. Which would seem to suggest that if this is off is just over that line, you'd think it would be "off-topic", rather than "NaGE"? – Jaydles♦ Jun 13 '10 at 10:15

Where can I find white pepper corns?

I was looking for these last weekend, and couldn't find them and would like to know, however I don't think it's an appropriate question. – raven Jun 1 '10 at 19:51

I agree, it's too localized – Kyle Cronin Jun 1 '10 at 19:56
...and a website link wouldn't do? – justkt Jun 3 '10 at 12:09
@justkt: I think you would find that website link using a search engine, so there is no need for the question to be asked here. If you're looking for a brick and mortar store at which to buy them, as Kyle said, it's too localized. – raven Jun 3 '10 at 13:38

How do I boil water?

too basic...... – Kyle Cronin Jun 2 '10 at 1:11

"How do I boil water for spaghetti" may be better. There are different methods to use ie: amount of salt, when to add the spaghetti, lid or no lid, etc. – d03boy Jun 2 '10 at 4:20
This is neither sufficiently specific nor sufficiently interesting for most people that would use the site. If the question gave further details, perhaps describing a purpose or explaining a difficulty, then it could be considered a better example. – nickname Jun 11 '10 at 1:32
