Great idea.....! – Mark Robinson Jul 13 at 9:45

Perhaps expand title to "IT Careers and Training"? That could cover specific job skills training, eg feedback on specific courses. – William Jul 13 at 10:40
@William - yeah, I like that idea - the two are closely related. But then I guess it could go broader still to include recommended reading, etc. – Mark Robinson Jul 13 at 11:36
@William - I totally agree, thanks for the suggestion! - title has been changed :) – Damovisa Jul 13 at 14:53

Can you recommend any books or other sources of info to study "Management 101"?
added by William Jul 13 at 10:46

Suggesting off-topic as it's more about management training than IT – Damovisa Jul 13 at 14:54
If the question body made no mention of IT, then I agree it's probably off topic. However, plenty of IT roles need management skills, so I thought it might fit in here? – William Jul 13 at 21:50

this seems very wide-ranging, and not-specific to just IT Careers & Training – warren Aug 4 at 18:37
@Warren - yes, that is true. Is that a problem for this Q&A? – Mark Robinson Aug 4 at 19:41

don't see it as a problem, no :) – warren Aug 4 at 19:56

added by warren Jul 13 at 18:38

I thought we should be targeting professionals already in the field. Given that, wouldn't this not be a good example? It's not off topic -- just not an example.... – Frank V Aug 9 at 18:06
@Frank V - "budding IT Professionals" is in the site's description (as of 1405EDT on 09-aug-2010) .. I thought this would apply to such "budding" folks :) – warren Aug 9 at 18:09

I know quite a few IT pros who started off in other fields and ended up here because it was their hobby. I think the question belongs. – LoganGoesPlaces Aug 17 at 1:40

I know it doesn't count, but my answer is "Skunk Works" by Ben Rich – warren Jul 22 at 0:59
@warren - well, thanks for the tip - I checked it out on Amazon and it gets great reviews - might add it to my Christmas list, thanks! =:-) – Mark Robinson Jul 22 at 7:39
1
it's a really great read - talks about leadership, dealing with painful customers (the US Goverment!), etc .. as to the "not a good example".. my guess would be that this could grow into a veritable Amazon of title suggestions and that it would become extremely difficult to wade through the suggestions, leaving really only the earliest contributions to be of any "vote value" – warren Jul 22 at 13:03
1
Funny thing is, warren, your answer was great - not "noise", which kind of works against your point here. =:-) – Mark Robinson Jul 23 at 13:54

Is learning [OS|tool] worthwhile, ie is there a future in that product?
added by warren Jul 22 at 1:01
link|flag
Subjective (to the OS|Tool), so I think this would be a off topic example... – Frank V Aug 12 at 0:49
@Frank V - it could be subjective.. so maybe cw'ing it would make sense? Or perhaps if worded similar to "I'm new to [X field] what are currently the dwindling products in use?" would be better? – warren Aug 12 at 1:15
@warren - Please recall that we are looking for the "best" example questions to represent the site. So a cw question wouldn't be acceptable as a "great" on-topic example (or off topic example for that matter). – Frank V Aug 12 at 14:22

What cues can you look for, to choose an answer to the interview question "Where do you see yourself in five years?"
added by William Jul 13 at 10:45
link|flag
Why wouldn't one answer this truthfully; wouldn't you want your long term goals to line up with a potential employer? – Frank V Aug 12 at 0:48
I agree; as an interviewer, I hope it would be truthful. However, from what I hear, the short term employment goal can override longer term goals, and some people think they can improve their chances on this answer. – William Aug 12 at 4:26

I’ve found limited success in my career (client facing software development, professional services). How can I most effectively increase my value?
added by Frank V Aug 8 at 13:16

The idea is details would be included in the body of the question. IT folks (myself included) can have a bit of trouble balancing the desire of pure software developments with business need. My hope for such a question is to provide guidance for those such developers. – Frank V Aug 8 at 13:25

Will I earn more as a helpdesk jockey or a PHP programmer?

Question is too subjective and has too many variables – William Jul 13 at 10:35
Of course you would make more as a programmer =P Unless you are working for yourself, or a nonprofit with no money, helping a buddy, working for a company that doesn't care about its employees, the list goes on =) But anyway Damovisa, the answer is Programmer because you will be much happier. Helpdesk includes talking to a lot of people who are not happy to be talking to you. – LoganGoesPlaces Aug 17 at 1:47
