Why call it Beer and Wine Brewing? Does this mean that anything that doesn't include grape juice or malted barley and hops is off topic? – qpr Jun 4 '10 at 1:57
3
I don't think distillation should be on-topic, btw. But if someone makes wine and beer, how can mead and champagne be out? Then there are more exotic things such as kvass. Maybe their tags wouldn't have a huge volume, but off-topic? What would SO be if only C# and Java were on-topic? Some kinds of wine in Europe are even less known than most exotic beverages. – qpr Jun 5 '10 at 2:06

How do I culture my own yeast?
added by TheHurt Jun 3 '10 at 20:21

This seems like it would be a difficult question to answer in this sort of forum; it is too broad. Entire books have been written on this topic. – pkaeding Jun 17 '10 at 16:24
@pkaeding Then a good answer could be a summary of the major topics with links to books, articles, other questions etc. – Tom Clift Jun 18 '10 at 3:04
Okay, I think that makes sense. – pkaeding Jun 18 '10 at 14:27

Two questions in one... The first one is a discussion, but the second is pretty good - how 'bout just, "Where can I get more information (recipes, ingredients, experiences) on archaeo-brewing?" – Shog9♦ Jun 10 '10 at 0:06

I think it follows that if an IPA recipe is a valid question then the inevitable clone questions will follow. Seems hard to allow one without the other to me. – J T Jun 3 '10 at 20:30

I generally think recipes are a bad idea. There are other sites better suited for searching for and finding recipes. I do think recipe tweaks are appropriate though, e.g. "How can I enhance the nutty flavors in a brown ale?". – Jerry Fernholz Jun 4 '10 at 17:44
Maybe more along the lines of "What is a good source for clone recipes?" with answers leading readers to other forums/resources? – Jim Jun 17 '10 at 3:08
I think a more general question like "How do I clone a commercial beer?" would be on-topic. Which would discuss techniques of doing so more than for just one particular beer. – Simon Jun 19 '10 at 2:13

Can we please clarify why this is off-topic? It's certainly a question many new brewers will ask. How about "Is it legal to make an eisbock in the USA?". If the question is off-topic because of the number of possibilities (200 countries, some with law at state level), perhaps that's fair enough. If the question is off-topic because it relates to law, I don't think that's a good reason, as it's a topic of interest to home brewers. – Tom Clift Jun 9 '10 at 22:45
@Tom: IMHO, the reason this is off-topic - and the reason why these sorts of questions are going to be off-topic for almost all proposals - is simply that the target audience is brewers and enthusiasts, not lawyers. Dispensing legal advice, and especially accepting legal advice from strangers on the 'Net is risky business, and even if the laws in question are fairly simple it's probably a can of worms best left unopened. – Shog9♦ Jun 10 '10 at 0:03

I spent all my on-topcs for now. But I do think beer styles is on-topic. To brew a style of beer you need to know what to look for. – Simon Jun 19 '10 at 2:38
Maybe the question isn't a good example, then. I agree with you that knowing the differences as far as brewing is concerned is on topic. The question could also be construed as what are the differences as far as consuming beer, in which case it would not be on topic. – rz_ Jun 19 '10 at 12:36
