I would probably go so far as to simply call this Logic Design, intending to emphasize both FPGA as well as ASIC design. There is often a lot of overlap between the two. – Anthony Nov 8 '10 at 21:12

@Anthony while many designs get ported between FPGA and ASIC depending on the volume and design cycle, there is very little cross-over in the tools. There are completely separate synthesis and physical implementation tool chains. I see this site's benefit at addressing the unique needs of FPGA implementation, rather than general logic design. This targets experienced professionals, as opposed to people in the learning phase. – Max Nov 18 '10 at 22:55

An unfortunate truth; there are more people wanting to ask questions about FPGAs who are in the learning phase, than who are experienced professionals. To get past the empty restaurant stage for this stack it may be necessary to be inclusive of abecedarian topics. See my question below: What is the distinction between Register Transfer Level and Behavioral design? – Jonathan Nov 21 '10 at 16:49

Top Example Questions

When your design does not meet timing, what do you do first? Change the design/HDL, or try to tweak the tools to try harder?

21
What is the most efficient way (in terms of logic use) to create a divide-by-2 circuit? How about division by odd numbers?

21
Are Verilog and VHDL practically interchangeable? Which are some of the reasons for regretting specialization in one over the other in the long-run?

20
I am testing a new multiplier structure, but XST keeps on inferring a DSP48E for it; how do I tell the tools to only use “regular” (FF/LUT) logic?

20
How do I go about making an FPGA design so that it's not tied to a particular vendor? What software/tools should I use?
