Why not make broaden this to include all economics, why must it be research only? It seems like doing so would greatly increase the userbase and interest in the site. – Mark Rogers Jan 7 '11 at 20:02

There is already a proposal for "economics" (area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1618/… problem is that the questions are extremely low-level and not at all interesting to specialists. The stress on "research" economics is to create a site that is useful for people on the research frontier. – optimalgmm Jan 15 '11 at 5:54

The model should be similar to mathoverflow.com and math.stackexchange.com. The first is a research-related forum, whereas the latter is more on 'business as usual' and even homework questions. – dmtrmv Jan 23 '11 at 22:05

The greatest amount of learning comes from allowing researchers to ask questions that deal with specific problems they encounter in research. These "exceptions" and frequently-asked-questions become really valuable for other people. In short, people should not be shy about asking how to solve research problems they face. Frequently, on listhosts like statalist, people are not generally encouraged to ask methodological questions and instead the focus is on software/programming. This Q&A site should welcome such questions. – dchandler Nov 28 '10 at 16:54

This is an example BAD question... we do NOT want this to be a community about the latest investment tips or any kind of CNBC-style economic opinions or forecasts. – dchandler Nov 28 '10 at 16:41
Would you consider "How can I estimate the length of the current downturn" a valid question? – Owe Jessen Aug 11 '11 at 14:00

Shouldn't these questions be rerouted to stats.SE? – Owe Jessen Aug 11 '11 at 13:55
It's an econometrics question, therefore it should be admissible here. There is an overlap with stats, but that is normal, i.e. not exclusive to this issue. – Pedro G. Rodrigues Jan 29 at 10:38

What is the best LaTeX editors/IDEs for writing economics articles?
added by dchandler Nov 28 '10 at 16:42

It should definitely be fair game to talk about "tools of the trade" and other non-economic subjects that relate to the carrying out of economic research. – dchandler Nov 28 '10 at 16:42
I would say such a question would be better suited in e. g. tex.SE - tools of the trade probably do not much differ between the fields of science, so that a good IDE for LaTeX is a good IDE for LaTeX wether you are a biologist, a physicist, a lawyer or an econometrician. – Owe Jessen Aug 11 '11 at 13:59
Where to draw the line? I think something like LaTeX is too general, but something like which platform or stat software has the best cointegration routines would be of interest to the economic research community. – Pedro G. Rodrigues Jan 29 at 10:41

What are some standard surveys or books for learning how to make good computational models in economics?
added by Artem Kaznatcheev Aug 14 '11 at 16:32

I feel like this is "tentatively an off-topic question" -- if only because it is incredibly broad. I am immediately curious about the field of application. Is this micro? I.O.? Macro? Financial econ? Algorithmic game theory? What is the specific question (or eve type of question) being addressed/modeled? – Nate Sep 5 '11 at 19:35
@Nathan I agree, it is very broad. Found it hard to ask a specific question in the 1-line we have. But hopefully questions about computational models will be welcome, if they are actual questions! – Artem Kaznatcheev Sep 5 '11 at 21:06
@Artem Fair enough. I agree that there isn't enough space to ask a super-specific question. And I certainly assume that computational modeling questions will be welcome -- if only because that's what I expect to be asking a reasonable bit! – Nate Sep 7 '11 at 21:34

Why is a question like this off-topic? because it's flame-y or not directly enough related to research? Would questions like, "Who have been important researchers in field XYZ?" be acceptable? It seems like it should be a legitimate question to ask who are influential researchers in a field as a way to navigate/find important ideas in that domain. – dchandler Nov 28 '10 at 16:57
I think that a more specific question -- like "who were the key figures in the development of modern noncooperative game theory?" would be reasonable, albeit borderline. (I think most StackExchange sites discourage, or even explicitly disallow, these questions.) This question is so broad, however, that it's impossible to have anything approaching an objective answer -- for one, it's wrapped in complicated and subjective judgments about the relative importance of subfields. – optimalgmm Nov 28 '10 at 18:08
I think even further granularity is needed. If we are going to name names might as well name papers. I am perfectly OK with questions like "what is the paper that" or "what are influential papers in this narrow sub-field" -- and famous names can show up via their frequent appearances on these citation lists. – figuringout Dec 2 '10 at 5:05

added by Nate Sep 5 '11 at 19:23

This strikes me as a clearly off-topic question, for two possible reasons: 1. It is not a research question, but more of a "general popular economics" question. 2. It borders on an "advise" question, which should possibly be routed elsewhere. – Nate Sep 5 '11 at 19:24
... to clarify, by "advise" [sic] I meant "personal financial advice." People seeking advice, of course, is exactly what this site is about... – Nate Sep 5 '11 at 19:37
