Votes over 10 for a particular question don't help to create the community. Rather than vote again for a popular question, it's best to look at some of the questions with fewer than 10 votes and upvote them. Don't forget that you can also move your votes. – PearsonArtPhoto Oct 22 '12 at 15:13

Grants and Funding available to a scout group in [the UK]

This is too general, I think that this is really a lot country-specific. – tohecz Sep 30 '12 at 20:24
Hi, consider editing this to focus on a question or a problem one might face in securing funding for a scout group. As it stands, this isn't really a question. Good luck! :) – jmort253 Oct 15 '12 at 0:45

Anyone know of good camping spots in [Norfolk]
added by Luke Duddridge Mar 3 '11 at 16:41

I appreciate the example is trying to show generic location, but do you mean Norfolk, England or Norfolk, Virginia? Or maybe another Norfolk? – Andrew Oct 15 '12 at 10:09
I am in the UK so Norfolk to me is in the UK. I dont think there is too much abiguity, it probably allows for a flow of options from both sides of the pond:) – Luke Duddridge Oct 16 '12 at 13:58

Should parents of active scouts be leaders in their sons pack/troop?

Great example, heard they have this problem at the troop I grew up in. They asked for help from the parents and got nothing back, so had to close down. I hear some parents are following their kids from beavers to cubs and hope they will choose to open the scouts again. – Luke Duddridge Mar 7 '11 at 13:32

How young is too young to earn Eagle?
added by jwernerny Mar 7 '11 at 1:06
link|flag
I love this question. These days there seem to be way too many 12 yr old eagles. How can you learn anything like that? – Different55 Jan 31 '12 at 0:12
3
This type of question is frowned upon in the Stack Exchange sites. From the FAQ: "Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. Stack Exchange does not work well with questions like "Which is the best…"" There are a lot of people with very strong opinions about this, and the question is poised to get that drama, rather than something concrete like "given the requirements, what is the minimum age a Scout could earn their Eagle?" But that's not the nature of this question anyway. – Joe Aug 1 '12 at 2:39
This has a factual answer. There are some requirements that take a certain amount of time, like the 30 days between athletic trials in Tenderfoot or six months in a position of responsibility. Add those up, and that is the earliest you can get Eagle. Adding any other restriction, like age, is strictly against BSA policy. It is adding a requirement and you must not do that. – Walter Underwood Aug 5 '12 at 19:00
Two types of people are very interested in this question: those that want to restrict the path of a motivated scout; and those that want to prove to the roadblocks that they are the problem. The best way to answer this question is to quote from national, otherwise the roadblocks will scoff at the answer – mhoran_psprep Oct 7 '12 at 14:54

added by Jeffrey C. Ollie Apr 4 '11 at 19:51

I'm not sure this is a good question. We really can't give legal or personalized advice. Besides, the rules are very straightforward and clear. I'm not sure how to phrase the question more productively. – Jon Ericson Nov 6 '12 at 17:00
There is always another corner case. A recent question at Ask Andy asked if an unmarried man and woman could share a tent on a campout. If they are both registered Scouters, that is not allowed, I think. If one is not registered, then it is not forbidden. And if the registered one is heterosexual and the unregistered one is transgender ... oh, I give up. – Walter Underwood Dec 4 '12 at 21:08

I'm going to Philmont this summer, what should I pack?
added by Jeffrey C. Ollie Apr 4 '11 at 20:09
link|flag
Should be changed to "I'm going to [Philmont] this summer, what should I pack?" Just Philmont is a bit temprary/localized. – Ian May 2 '12 at 13:35
2
Actually, I could see this being a separate question for each High Adventure camp. The items you would take to Philmont would be considerably different than the ones you would take to Sea Base. – Steven Drennon Jun 7 '12 at 14:55
This is really important for Philmont, because the gear list they recommend is way too heavy. Start with Andrew Skurka's gear list, reviewed here (by me): scoutmastercg.com/2012/05/… – Walter Underwood Aug 5 '12 at 19:01

My Pack's parents have told me Character Development is the most important aspect of Scouting to them. What activities do you do that build character?
added by cpilko Apr 30 '12 at 17:37
link|flag
This comes off as a "getting to know you" type question, which isn't really a good fit for Stack Exchange. It tends to invite lists of things, or very short one-liner answers that don't explain why or how. Consider making an [edit] to focus on a problem one might face in activities designed to build character instead. Hope this helps! :) – jmort253 Oct 15 '12 at 0:42
@jmort253: Yes, if I had more space than Area 51 provides, my question would be more specific, e.g: "What age-appropriate activity could you do with a den of [Tiger Cubs] while on [a pack overnighter] to build character?" In this question "Character Development" could be replaced with any of the aims & methods of Scouting. Of course, if you're a Scouter and feel passionately about this, I'd take your suggestion more seriously if you followed this proposal. ;) – cpilko Oct 15 '12 at 14:48
Regardless of whether or not I follow the proposal, your question isn't a good example. I went ahead and voted to close. If you want to improve it, please do something about the last sentence. That's the problem. You're asking for a list, which isn't a good example. Or get rid of the first part, which isn't a question, to give yourself more room to improve. See Real Questions Have Answers for guidance. Good luck! – jmort253 Oct 15 '12 at 15:23

Where can I find free software to organize [a troop library, a troop gear list, troop advancement, my troop dues, a troop roster]?
added by Ian May 2 '12 at 13:38
link|flag
This would be more appropriate if it asked if there was a specific BSA approved software package for organizing/monitoring your unit. In its current form, it just invites a list and would be more suited as a community wiki. – Steven Drennon Jun 7 '12 at 14:57
It would also be better if it indicated where they are. It wouldn't help if it was assumed he was in the BSA. – KevinManx Aug 10 '12 at 14:24
There is no BSA-approved package. This does represent (potentially) five different questions. Gear lists and inventory might be covered by a non-Scouting package, for example. – Walter Underwood Dec 4 '12 at 21:04

My unit wants to post photos from our activities on a public website or social network. What privacy issues need we be aware of?
added by Joe Aug 1 '12 at 2:43

The BSA social media guidelines are a good starting point, though each national Scouting organizations is likely to have their own. scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/Marketing/… I could not find something similar for GSUSA, bu they do have an Internet pledge for Girl Scouts: girlscouts.org/help/internet_safety_pledge.asp – Walter Underwood Dec 4 '12 at 21:02
As is, it is certainly too general. This certainly depends on the country. And as well, it might be better suited at the law SE site. – tohecz Dec 4 '12 at 22:36

Since this only happens once every few years and changes locations each time, I think it's a good question. It should perhaps be modified to also ask "when" it will be held. – Steven Drennon Aug 15 '11 at 22:59
I agree with Steven, the question should include the year – Jeffrey C. Ollie Aug 26 '11 at 18:59

This question is not a good fit to our Q&A format. We expect answers to generally involve facts, references, or specific expertise; this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

1
This is rather subjective. – fire.eagle Mar 15 '12 at 13:40
But subjective doesn't mean it isn't worth talking about. Maybe you'll get to know some new recipes. – JeroenG Mar 18 '12 at 22:04
1
But it does mean it's not a great fit for a Stack Exchange site - recipes are off-topic at Cooking.SE for just this reason. See also: blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/09/… – Zhaph - Ben Duguid Mar 26 '12 at 10:43
If this proposal does take off, this type of question would be good to have as a community wiki. I agree that it is not appropriate as a question for the actual site, but it would be a very benficial wiki item, especially for new units. – Steven Drennon Jun 7 '12 at 14:58
