Reverse Engineering

Proposed Q&A site for reverse engineering: The process of discovering the technological principles of a device, object or system through analysis of its structure, function and operation. It is actually "going backwards through the development cycle" in all engineering!

I hate to so blatantly promote my own proposal, but why wouldn't this (and other engineering proposals) be more successful as part of a more comprehensive engineering stack exchange? – Colin K Jan 20 '11 at 21:52

Reverse Engineering is a niche subject rapidly growing in popularity and very different from forward thinking engineering. Regarding your proposal: Trying to shove all engineering topics into a single SE site is ridiculous. People would never be able to find the questions they are capable of answering. For the same reason, I strongly feel that Reverse Engineering needs its own SE site. – Rob S. Jan 20 '11 at 22:00

Reverse engineering is a natural part of all engineering disciplines. Debugging software is reverse engineering, following traces on a PCB is reverse engineering. Stripping down a car engine to discover how it works is reverse engineering. I think the topic is best handled through a common tag across sites of experts from each field. Eg. stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/… – Joby Taffey Jan 20 '11 at 23:32
