Can we extend this to cover military history and warfare in general so as to include the newly created "warfare" site? – DJClayworth Jan 17 '11 at 14:30

Yeah, I had it in there but someone edited it out. – Mark Rogers Jan 17 '11 at 16:34

What is the US army equivalent to the Swedish Army rank "Fänrik"?
added by Lennart Regebro Jan 7 '11 at 17:25

Why is this a bad example? See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanrik. – Jaime Soto Jan 9 '11 at 21:11
1
From the description you linked, it sounds like more of a billet than an actual rank. I don't believe there is an equivalent in the US army. US Army rank structure does include warrant officers, but none are described as having the unique position of a Fanrik. – adalgiso Jan 10 '11 at 11:42
2
@adalgiso: It's a rank (and the description says so clearly). And yes, it's hard to translate to English. That was intentional. :-) – Lennart Regebro Jan 12 '11 at 21:28
I know that in Finnish it's a rank, what I meant was that there is no American rank equivalent and it would be considered a billet in American. If anything, it's probably similar to an American warrant officer. – adalgiso Jan 14 '11 at 15:07

Which still doesn't make it a bad example. – Lennart Regebro Feb 17 '11 at 7:27

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_War – Wikis Jan 9 '11 at 17:27
subjective. Not necessarily bad, but might be better if pertained to a specific idea :) – CrazyJugglerDrummer Jan 11 '11 at 1:27
Actually, as The Art of War is consistently featured on the USMC's Commandant's Reading List, I would offer that the question, though short, it already to the point. (And, if you hadn't guessed, I'd say: Yes) – Andrew Kozak Jan 13 at 18:14

How many combat jet fighters does the Indian Air Force have?
added by gkrogers Jan 8 '11 at 10:16
link|flag
1
Why is this "not a good example"? Leave a comment and I'll try to address your concern by editing the question. – gkrogers Jan 9 '11 at 7:25
A better example would be "How many jet fighters does a typical military force have?" or "How does the military utilize jet fighters?" or even "What kind of fighter jets are used in the military?" Asking about the Indian Air Force specifically is too narrowly focused, and it says nothing about the military in general. – adalgiso Jan 10 '11 at 11:32
1
Apart from "How many jet fighters does a typical military force have?", which is far too vague and asking to get down-voted, those are good examples, but I don't see that any of them make this a bad example. It is a narrow question and it doesn't ask anything about the military in general, but those aren't indicative of a bad question, as far as I know. What if someone jsut wants to know how many jets the IAF has? Would that be off-topic? – gkrogers Jan 11 '11 at 13:41
4
Specific questions about specific militaries should be on-topic. – DJClayworth Mar 3 '11 at 21:43

Why would this be considered off-topic? The Foreign Legion is a legitimate military organization, unique in the fact that it accepts members from outside its parent country. – adalgiso Jan 10 '11 at 11:35
