I am not one who is heavily into PC-language, but as the parent of a child with autism, I know first-hand that saying "typical children" instead of "normal children" promotes a much healthier view of what it means to have autism. – Kevin Welker Mar 12 at 17:56

This, I think, is the elephant in the room for any Autism Q&A site. And with Vote Up/Vote Down mechanisms, its a bit vulnerable to a particularly organized/vocal 'side'. – EpiGrad Sep 2 '11 at 3:55

Ignoring this controversy for a moment, we will expect questions about causes: pregnancy issues, environment, genetics, – mhoran_psprep Feb 27 at 14:11

I fail to see the point in discussing flammable topics (such as the causes of autism) on a Q&A site. It would be like having a Stack Exchange site for the Bible and then "discuss" whether there is a God. – marcusalmgren Mar 2 at 19:05

While I agree the question is sensitive, I disagree that it means the question does not have value. And the question may even alleviate ignorance, one way or another. – Mark Rogers Mar 2 at 20:22

I would probably want to edit this question to say "...children who have ASD." Suffer is subjective and feels too pejorative. Although, I realize it's just another way of saying children who have Autism. – Paul Cline Jun 23 '11 at 22:15

added by Pimgd Feb 24 at 10:30

Most people want to know what it is when you tell them you have autism, but autism is a very broad concept. Usually I don't get much further than "I tend to take things literally" and "I can only handle 1 thing at a time". People tend to treat me differently if I don't take 30 minutes to explain myself. – Pimgd Feb 24 at 10:33
