My child struggles at school because of his autism, and I do not think the teachers are adequate to handle him/her, how can I help?

Remember that votes above 10 do not help a proposal definition, so many consider every vote above 10 as a wasted vote. It is far more useful to use your vote to approve of a question with fewer than 10 votes. Also, if a question you have already voted on now has more than 10 votes, remember that you can remove your up vote and put it on another suitable question. These two tips will help get this proposal get through the definition phase more quickly. – Mark Booth Oct 2 '12 at 14:00

This would be a great question for the Cognitive Sciences StackExchange, which is already in beta and welcomes questions about autism and neurobiology. – Artem Kaznatcheev Jun 6 '12 at 0:21
It would be, posted as cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/1363/… – volkerjaan Jul 1 '12 at 14:20

Are autistic children as happy as typical children?

I am not one who is heavily into PC-language, but as the parent of a child with autism, I know first-hand that saying "typical children" instead of "normal children" promotes a much healthier view of what it means to have autism. – Kevin Welker Mar 12 '12 at 17:56
Yes that would be the correct language to use ... according to the Autism meetings and conferences I have attended. – Sharon Kay Jun 29 '12 at 21:21
Questioners are not necessarily going to use 'preferred terminology' and this probably represents a normal (or do I mean typical?) question. – DJClayworth Jul 23 '12 at 20:35
Changed "normal" to "typical". – Felix Dombek Jul 23 '12 at 21:17
As i am autistic, I can say it all depends. In middle school I was bullied for my poor social skills and even considered suicide. Now that I am in high school and have friends who accept me for who I am, I am extremely happy and actually enjoy school. – Cole Johnson Sep 18 '12 at 16:10

This does sound better, +1 I often see "off-topic" used where it really meant "not specific enough" or something. – BoltClock May 31 '11 at 3:27

I would probably want to edit this question to say "...children who have ASD." Suffer is subjective and feels too pejorative. Although, I realize it's just another way of saying children who have Autism. – Paul Cline Jun 23 '11 at 22:15

This, I think, is the elephant in the room for any Autism Q&A site. And with Vote Up/Vote Down mechanisms, its a bit vulnerable to a particularly organized/vocal 'side'. – EpiGrad Sep 2 '11 at 3:55

Ignoring this controversy for a moment, we will expect questions about causes: pregnancy issues, environment, genetics, – mhoran_psprep Feb 27 '12 at 14:11

I fail to see the point in discussing flammable topics (such as the causes of autism) on a Q&A site. It would be like having a Stack Exchange site for the Bible and then "discuss" whether there is a God. – marcusalmgren Mar 2 '12 at 19:05

While I agree the question is sensitive, I disagree that it means the question does not have value. And the question may even alleviate ignorance, one way or another. – Mark Rogers Mar 2 '12 at 20:22

How do you inform others that you have autism in an understandable manner?

Most people want to know what it is when you tell them you have autism, but autism is a very broad concept. Usually I don't get much further than "I tend to take things literally" and "I can only handle 1 thing at a time". People tend to treat me differently if I don't take 30 minutes to explain myself. – Pimgd Feb 24 '12 at 10:33
