Quand doit-on commencer un mot par une majuscule (noms de mois, de lieux, etc.) ?

This seems to be a genuine ongoing debate between native French speakers - a bit like whether to use guillemets or English-style quotation marks. – Jez Feb 19 '11 at 10:30

I don't know which part of a hyphened word gets the plural s. Is there a rule?
added by Phira May 5 '11 at 10:03

Indeed, there's a rule, and don't be surprise, it depends on the word. – Hugo May 29 '11 at 19:28

Est-il correct de tomber le "il" dans "il y a"? (eg: "y a des chiens ...")
added by Barbara Morton May 27 '11 at 23:16

Non, c'est incorrect. Il s'agit d'une contraction orale. – Hugo May 29 '11 at 19:26

Is it wise to use 'francophonisms' for modern words (courriel for e-mail, cédérom for CD-ROM, etc.), or just to use the original English?
added by CrystaLight May 29 '11 at 10:16

"Is it wise" is a bit subjective, it should probably common/acceptable or something like that. – Matthew Read May 29 '11 at 17:51

I suggested this as an off-topic example because of it is localized and not directly related to language. Can you explain why you think it is NAGE? – Caleb May 10 '11 at 6:25
I have not voted because this question could be made in a question that asks for more general ressources to improve French language skills that I would prefer having on-topic (while not the primary focus). – Phira May 10 '11 at 14:12
@user9325: How? – Caleb May 10 '11 at 14:22
By asking about a collection of links to site that facilitate this kind of thing instead of asking for French speakers in Springfield. – Phira May 10 '11 at 14:32
I think that the list of off-topic examples should be a list of behaviour that has to be discouraged. I just cannot view this question as an actual problem. (But I have no problem if others want it in the off-topic list.) – Phira May 10 '11 at 14:33

This was meant as an off-topic example (i.e. subjective and argumentative). Can you comment on why it is not a good example? – Phira May 8 '11 at 8:29
@user: An off-topic example is a good question, but off-topic. "Subjective and argumentative" questions are not good examples. – Tim N May 27 '11 at 20:22
