@Mark Robinson: I think this might be better phrased as "When could..." – bemace Oct 7 '10 at 4:36
@bemace, yes, maybe, because theoretically there is no problem with it. I'll leave it for now (unless more people support your comment) but thanks for the feedback. – Wikis Oct 7 '10 at 7:48

Why pursue manned space missions when we can send 10-100 robotic missions for the cost of one manned mission?

This is a good question and often becomes an argumentative and subjective debate online. I think the SE format will make important questions like this less problematic though. – Helvick Jun 27 '10 at 9:40

Is the population of space junk in orbit around our planet really unstable?
added by WikiSpeedia hang-around Jun 4 '10 at 22:11
link|flag
(Unstable in the sense that the density of space junk is so high that collisions between them will increase the number of objects [and thus the density] even if all rocket launches completely stopped. Orbit decay can not keep up with the increase in the number of objects.) – WikiSpeedia hang-around Jun 4 '10 at 22:12

On-topic, although I think this Wikipedia article is the answer: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_space_telescopes – WikiSpeedia hang-around Jul 8 '10 at 7:21
@WikiSpeedia : that list kinda sucks ... they don't include solar telescopes, and refer to another page, which only includes heliocentric and lagrangian satellites (doesn't include earth-orbiting solar telescopes, and doesn't mention which solar probes don't include telescopes) – Joe Aug 31 '11 at 19:22

This is an excellent question for defining the borders. Amateur rockets can not go to space, but the issues are the same as for normal rockets in the first part of their flight (albeit on a different scale). What are some arguments for off-topic and for on-topic? – WikiSpeedia hang-around Aug 6 '10 at 22:52
Amateur rockets seem quite on-topic, but once you start talking about rocket design, I think it would belong on Engineering – bemace Oct 7 '10 at 4:45
It seems to me that some "serious" space enthusiasts might develop amateur rockets. I have read of some developers pushing the envelope of what these rockets can do. If the word "amateur" were removed, would this be an on topic question? Does it make that much of a difference if it is an amateur? – zemoxian Apr 26 '11 at 19:48

@strictlyrude27 : I'm just providing attribution ... I put it here because I agree, it's not really astronomy ... but does it qualify as 'space exploration' ? (and I put a few others from astronomy.se in here, too) – Joe Aug 31 '11 at 19:15
Based on the current description ("Proposed Q&A site for aerospace engineers and (serious) space enthusiasts), I think it at least qualifies to be here. – strictlyrude27 Sep 1 '11 at 6:54
