Stop adding votes to this; votes raising a question above 10 in the definition phase are counter-productive. Add them instead to a question which has less than 10 votes. – JoshDM Mar 11 at 0:08

This seems like something a consumer user is likely to want to know and it something people should probably avoid on many laptops, why the off topic? Is this considered SU material? – Kortuk Jul 11 '11 at 13:24

Question came from Electronics.SE and is off-topic there. electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/17510/… – Kellenjb Jul 28 '11 at 14:07
Do not really agree with above. This is more of a scientific question, and would likely be more related to physics. – LanceLafontaine Apr 5 '12 at 2:22

I don't agree with it being off topic for Electronics, let alone being off topic here. It would equally belong in all three, IMO. – Dalin Seivewright Jun 28 '12 at 16:50
@Dalin I am not sure how you can say if something is off topic for a site or not if you aren't even a member of that site. As far the validity of it here, that is why I posted it. Let the community decide by their votes if it should be in the scope of this site or not. – Kellenjb Jun 28 '12 at 17:32

I'm putting this out to discuss handling of questions that already have a specific SE dedicated to them. – BMitch Jun 16 '11 at 20:56

This question is more concerned about software aspect of the device and not Electronics aspect. Also, there is a dedicate site for it. – Gunner Jun 17 '11 at 8:16
Are questions relating to the software aspect of Consumer Electronics really a problem for this proposal? In most cases the software is integral to the device. And even when it isn't, the vast majority of users would not use anything but the standard software for the device. Yes it's possible to send 'off-limit' iPad/Galaxy/Canon questions off packing to the Apple/Android/Photography sites. But surely that would just dilute the usefulness of the Consumer Electronics site? – Craig Young Jul 1 '12 at 17:07

My DVD player does not fit in my current shelf. How can I reduce the size of the enclosure without damaging the electronics?

off-topic related to the mechanic enclosure and not the use of the electronics. – Kortuk Jul 11 '11 at 13:26
somewhat on topic I should say. Some one could give a redesign of the dvd player without affecting the underlying electronics material. – Gunner Jul 11 '11 at 18:31
@Gunner, that would be designing a mechanical enclosure, now you are supporting both electronics and mechanical design. At what point is the cutoff? When they want to redesign the shelf for better air flow via slitting patterns? I suddenly see why people note gadgets failed with too few of experts. – Kortuk Jul 12 '11 at 0:50
@Kortuk: I understand your point. There has to be a cut off somewhere, but if a particular question doesn't fit anywhere else, they may find themselves here. Let's see if this proposal moves to commit phase and how things turn up with more active users. – Gunner Jul 12 '11 at 5:33
@Gunner, The idea that you must house anything that does not have a home can be very very bad. Can you make some off-topic example questions? – Kortuk Jul 12 '11 at 6:00

extra explanation: I know charging won't work, but I had hoped the wheel would at least go forward/backward in an audio file, as it does with a "normal" ipod. – newenglander Jul 29 '11 at 10:04
