In Polish future tense formed with “być” we can use the verb in infinitive (“będę jeść”) or in the past form (“będę jadł(a)”). Which is preferred?

How can I find abridged books to read if I've been learning Polish for about 6 months?

This question can be actually crucial for people trying to learn Polish, because it is really difficult to find such books. – jankes Aug 7 '11 at 18:44

Do some Polish dialects or speakers still pronounce "rz" like Czechs pronounce "ř"?
added by hippietrail Sep 22 '11 at 0:09
link|flag
Off topic?? Because it mentions another language instead of using the technical linguistics name for the sound? – hippietrail Sep 23 '11 at 21:51
3
Admittedly the technical linguistics name for the sound is pretty obscure and in dispute; but calling it the Czech "ř" is clear and unambiguous. If this is off-topic here I don't know where it would be on-topic! – Mark Beadles Jan 30 '12 at 17:16
@hippietrail - oh, don't worry, this is not offtopic. just because one not using strict linguistic terms does not make a question offtopic. This is a perfect and 100% valid question. – shabunc Sep 28 '12 at 8:15
@Xitcod13 Oh, thanks for the tip! Well, I haven't answered the question very properly. I'm not sure that not a single dialect continues this pronunciation. Mańczak’s book only describes the literary standard. Perhaps in some far away village hidden in the mountains? ;) – Kamil S. Oct 16 '12 at 18:30
It is possible nobody knows what language they're speaking. :P – Xitcod13 Oct 16 '12 at 18:47

I've picked up a random mix of half a dozen Slavic languages on my travels. Could this lead to any pitfalls when trying to learn a little Polish?

I know there are many "False Friends" in the Slavic languages, so this might be a good one. – Mark Beadles Jan 30 '12 at 17:14
Oh, yes. Some perfectly innocent common words from other slavic countries happen to be obscene in Polish. – SF. Dec 7 '12 at 18:14

Is there any difference between the words zmrok and zmierzch?
added by mikeyP Dec 20 '11 at 14:43
link|flag
Well, the Stephanie Meyer novel is translated as "Zmierzch". :) But seriously this is a very good question. My native-Polish speaking spouse is not even sure if there is any difference.... – Mark Beadles Jan 31 '12 at 2:40
Oh my, I've just realised how complicated that is! – jankes Feb 23 '12 at 21:23
Thanks guys, I guess context would be the key here. – mikeyP Feb 27 '12 at 22:26
Very good point about the timespan covered by the two words, @Kamil. Seems obvious now that you've written it. (On the other hand, the metaphorical meanings almost always go with only one synonym, so I wouldn't give zmierzch czegoś as an example here.) – jankes May 18 '12 at 8:13

How is "dzień" pronounced exactly? It sounds like "gin" (from "gin tonic"). Is this correct? Or is my hearing wrong?
added by Matt N. Mar 13 at 11:46

I ran out of characters. What I really wanted to ask is the following: "I just started to learn Polish and I'm trying to get the pronunciation right. I have the following question: the "dzień" in the greeting "dzień dobry" sounds like "gin" in English (as in gin tonic) to me. But I can see there is an "e". Hence my question: do I not hear it correctly or is it really not pronounced?" – Matt N. Mar 13 at 12:50
