Poker

Proposed Q&A site for serious players of Texas Hold 'Em, Omaha, Five Card Stud, etc.

This should be strictly one kind of poker not all games of chance. There is so much to poker strategy it is not a pure game of chance. – David Basarab Jun 4 at 14:37

Given the number of books available on poker strategy, I don't think this is too narrow. There are lots of different variations of poker as well. – Ether Jun 5 at 16:26
1
I don't agree that this is too narrow. The topic is really too vast. It seems like a lot of legitimate questions are being voted down because they aren't hard wired to a hand being played. – Dan Blair Jun 16 at 20:15
3
I think that it should be clarified whether the site is about "poker" or "poker strategy". My opinion is that it should be a site "for professional and enthusiast poker players", which is in line with Stack Overflow's "for professional and enthusiast programmers". With this in mind I think that questions like "What poker site has the lowest rake?" should be allowed since it helps players in their quest to make money, while questions like "Who has won the most WSOP titles?" should not. – D.H. What is a continuation bet?
added by David Basarab Jun 4 at 14:34

1
@D.H. I disagree. When a player finally decides to become serious this is one of the first bluffs they learn. This is a site to learn how to strategically play poker and should cover all levels. By definition any player want to learn to play strategically is serious. – David Basarab Jun 29 at 16:33
4
@David Basarab. Quoting the FAQ of Area51: "To attract experts, you need a site where people are asking very interesting and challenging questions, not the basic questions found on every other Q&A site. Your goal is to make it clear that this is a PRO site". The definition of a continuation bet can easily be found using Google. While there can be many interesting questions regarding when to or when not to continuation bet, the definition of the term is not a very interesting question. Let me make it clear though that I think that this question should be allowed, it's just not a great example. – D.H. Jun 29 at 17:39

I play [exotic poker variant] in my home game. What are the best starting hands there?

This is for "serious" poker players. This question would be consider off topic. – David Basarab Jun 10 at 13:30

I'd say its on topic. There are many types of poker, and one of the key aspects of the game are knowing the odds for a given situation. What differentiates poker from other types of card games is that it you can use probability to calculate optimal starting hands. – Greg Bray Jun 16 at 20:55

This is on topic. If "serious" poker players can't ask/answer questions then what are you trying to do here? – Simon Jun 17 at 0:15
1
Chicago (7 card stud, hi-lo, highest revealed spade in the hole takes low share) seems like an excellent 'exotic' variant that could benefit from discussion. I've played in a number of home/hosted games where one could stand to make serious money by having an improved strategy for this and other variants. Pineapple Hold'em is also occasionally spread in tournaments and/or played in HORSE-type games. – meklarian Jun 22 at 8:48

Stack Overflow is a site "for professional and enthusiast programmers". This should be a site for "for professional and enthusiast poker players". The answer to this question is of great interest to online poker players so I think that it is great question. – D.H. Jun 28 at 10:57

I think there's a need for questions like this. Everywhere I've played, a single chip is a call for example, something that bites a lot of players coming from online poker where issues like this and how to properly announce a bet/raise does not exist. – Freed Jun 28 at 18:45

Software like Hold'Em Manager is allowed by most sites, so this question is OK. It might make sense to close questions that clearly discusses stuff that is against site TOS:s though. – D.H. Jun 28 at 13:15

This represents a typical hand analysis question. The body of the question would contain details about the hand and the opponents. It would be tagged with game type ("NL Hold'em") and stakes ("Mid-stakes") and something like "Hand analysis". – D.H. Jun 28 at 16:54

What is the best Texas Hold'em book to teach tournament play?

Off topic because this is subjective. Different books would help different people on each way. – David Basarab Jun 4 at 20:49

There are going to be a lot of subjective questions when it comes to poker. That's the beauty of a site like this. Search for "Best Java Book" or similar over on Stack Overflow to see that these types of questions are definitely useful and should be allowed. – Simon Jun 17 at 0:18

We have to allow for the title of the question to be sort of vague, don't we? Strategy questions will require a detailed explanation of the hand and that explanation should go in the body of the question. Tags (No-limit-holdem, High-stakes) will help the reader figure out whether or not to click and have a look at the question. – D.H. Jun 28 at 11:35
