Stack Overflow is a site "for professional and enthusiast programmers". This should be a site for "for professional and enthusiast poker players". The answer to this question is of great interest to online poker players so I think that it is great question. – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 10:57

I'd say its on topic. There are many types of poker, and one of the key aspects of the game are knowing the odds for a given situation. What differentiates poker from other types of card games is that it you can use probability to calculate optimal starting hands. – Greg Bray Jun 16 '10 at 20:55

Chicago (7 card stud, hi-lo, highest revealed spade in the hole takes low share) seems like an excellent 'exotic' variant that could benefit from discussion. I've played in a number of home/hosted games where one could stand to make serious money by having an improved strategy for this and other variants. Pineapple Hold'em is also occasionally spread in tournaments and/or played in HORSE-type games. – meklarian Jun 22 '10 at 8:48

@D.H. I disagree. When a player finally decides to become serious this is one of the first bluffs they learn. This is a site to learn how to strategically play poker and should cover all levels. By definition any player want to learn to play strategically is serious. – David Basarab Jun 29 '10 at 16:33

Quoting the FAQ of Area51: "To attract experts, you need a site where people are asking very interesting and challenging questions, not the basic questions found on every other Q&A site. Your goal is to make it clear that this is a PRO site". The definition of a continuation bet can easily be found using Google. While there can be many interesting questions regarding when to or when not to continuation bet, the definition of the term is not a very interesting question. Let me make it clear though that I think that this question should be allowed, it's just not a great example. – D.H. Jun 29 '10 at 17:39

This represents a typical hand analysis question. The body of the question would contain details about the hand and the opponents. It would be tagged with game type ("NL Hold'em") and stakes ("Mid-stakes") and something like "Hand analysis". – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 16:54

There are going to be a lot of subjective questions when it comes to poker. That's the beauty of a site like this. Search for "Best Java Book" or similar over on Stack Overflow to see that these types of questions are definitely useful and should be allowed. – Simon Jun 17 '10 at 0:18

Tricky subject, as poker software packages are against TOS on many sites, but creating a poker Q&A site that closes any question asking about poker software is destine to fail. – Greg Bray Jun 16 '10 at 21:05

Software like Hold'Em Manager is allowed by most sites, so this question is OK. It might make sense to close questions that clearly discusses stuff that is against site TOS:s though. – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 13:15

+1 Good example question, but in reality most of these details would be contained within the body of the question and the question should be shortened to something like "AhKd - Flop top pair, value bet J turn?" – Tom Gullen Aug 24 '10 at 8:36

I think the site will need a way to markdown cards that looks a bit nicer than As8h9d, and will be supported in question titles. Then, you can define question a standard format for these questions, e.g.: [Ah][Kd] / [As][8h][9d][Jd] Do I bet? – configurator Oct 1 '10 at 1:58

The problem with these questions is you need allot of details to answer correctly. Pre-flop? Post-flop? Turn? River? What are the size of the raises what is the total amount in your pot, how much do you have are you playing a tournament or cash game. These details need to be in the body of the question to be answered correctly. – David Basarab Jun 4 '10 at 20:02

We have to allow for the title of the question to be sort of vague, don't we? Strategy questions will require a detailed explanation of the hand and that explanation should go in the body of the question. Tags (No-limit-holdem, High-stakes) will help the reader figure out whether or not to click and have a look at the question. – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 11:35

This is the sort of question we need to attract if we want it to suceed. We can't just have a site on the rules of poker, you will have about 100 questions before exact duplicates appear. FWIW, I intended this as an on-topic, although I'll respect the communty's conclusion. While it changes, it's fairly infrequent, and it's relevant to lots of poker players, per @Jeff's comment.
