Shouldn't the Geocaching Exchange be listed under “Recreation” rather than “Life”?

This question is unlikely to ever help any future visitors; it is only relevant to a small geographic area, a specific moment in time, or an extraordinarily narrow situation that is not generally applicable to the worldwide audience of the internet.

This question is not a good fit to our Q&A format. We expect answers to generally involve facts, references, or specific expertise; this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

How can I make a cache that can withstand being left alone for long periods of time?

This is asking too much for one question. I've proposed an alternative that would work as a good exemplar question. area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/35390/… – Lisa Dec 13 '11 at 0:06
I think this is an acceptable question. It touches on issues of cache longevity. Weather is probably the main concern, but also issues of animals, changing terrain, and muggles. – GeoGriffin Feb 8 '12 at 17:12
1
It will be a good question providing it's narrowed down to a terrain/area: Woodlands, metropolitan, postindustrial, rural, desert etc. The prerequisites for cache survival in city center are entirely different than near a mountain top. – SF. Jan 18 at 9:17

The rules are available on geocaching.com. An answer to this question could point them to the rules. The question could also be interpreted as looking for guidelines or opinions on what makes a good cache hide. – GeoGriffin Feb 8 '12 at 17:14

Is there an app that meets [criteria] for finding caches?
added by DForck42 Sep 29 '11 at 19:39
link|flag
I don't understand the question – froderik Nov 2 '11 at 22:26
I think it is meant to be a generic question. Meaning to find out if questions of this type are suitable for this site: e.g. "Is there an app that is for free?" "Is there an app that can show you the nearest caches when you are traveling?"... and so on. – Karin Nov 18 '12 at 19:46

What should the terrain rating be for a cache hidden on an island?
added by froderik Nov 2 '11 at 22:25
link|flag
1
Might be too general. What kind of island? Although the base terrain for islands in general may be a 3 or 4 due to the fact they are islands, it could go pretty high if the island is rocky, hilly, swampy, etc. A better question may be "What should the base terrain rating be for a cache hidden on an island?" – Brian McCord Feb 2 '12 at 23:00
3
I think this is a good question. I know of some cachers that see an island cache as "special equipment (a boat) required". Others consider a boat as standard equipment, much like boots, hip waders, or other readily available "low or no skill required" equipment. These people consider "special equipment required" as "high skill" equipment like rappelling gear or scuba equipment. – GeoGriffin Feb 8 '12 at 17:18

@Brian: This kind of detail should appear in the actual question description, no need to stuff everything in the subject. – SF. Jan 10 at 14:56
