Is Auslan in decline due to parents believing their deaf children are better off learning to lipread instead?
added by hippietrail Nov 7 '11 at 21:17

Oops I meant to ask this about Auslan because I had heard a couple of things suggesting so but when I typed the question I put ASL by mistake - sorry. – hippietrail Nov 12 '11 at 16:40
I'm not sure a question like this would have an answer, unless supported by external studies... – Nightfirecat Sep 26 '12 at 3:38
I believe there are studies, and if not, a definitive answer that there are definitely no studies would still be a good one. – hippietrail Sep 26 '12 at 4:12

Do deaf people prefer sign language interpretation over subtitles, and why?
added by Raphael Jul 23 '12 at 18:26

It's a personal-preference thing, thus this doesn't have a concrete answer. – Nightfirecat Sep 26 '12 at 3:34
@Nightfirecat I seem to remember someone telling me that (some?) people growing up deaf and signing don't have their "mother tongue" (say English) as native language, but signing, so they have as much trouble with English subtitles as if they were foreigners. That sounded plausible to me, and I have observed that some TV shows and political events have signers translate and overlayed rather than using subtitles. I think it's a valid concern if you want to create accessible media. "It's personal" would be a valid answer (the asker wouldn't know it's subjective) and tell me to do both. – Raphael Sep 26 '12 at 10:52
I suppose that would be the question "Do deaf people prefer....", which I can see a more structured discussion of. – Nightfirecat Sep 27 '12 at 0:29
@Nightfirecat That's fine, too, and probably clearer. I edited accordingly. – Raphael Sep 28 '12 at 11:22

@hippietrail: Perhaps, though it could be broadened to asking "How do you express plurality in [ASL]?" – Nightfirecat Dec 13 '11 at 0:20
