Is there a time limit put on proposals gaining momentum before they are closed?

How do you explain the distinction between linked trips and unlinked trips in public transit to the uninitiated?
added by Isaac Moses Dec 9 '11 at 17:53
link|flag
I'm the un-initiated, and here's what would make sense to me, "When a person gets off one bus or train, and they get off on another bus or train, knowing that the 'trip is linked' would allow you to count them as one person, and would help you understand how that person gets around. If the trip is not 'linked', you may be counting them as two people, and / or you may never know where they actually started their journey". It also depends heavily on what purpose you're trying to serve by explainign it to them... – Anjana Dec 9 '11 at 23:11
@Anjana, Thanks, but the point here is just to throw out questions that are good examples of what this forum would deal in if created, not to actually get answers. – Isaac Moses Dec 11 '11 at 3:49

Given boardings per trip (but not per stop and not alightings) on a public transit route, how would you estimate maximum load on that route?

What kind of data is typically available to city transportation planners? Do they know the origin and end destination of each traveler?

I'm not sure a professional would ask this question. – Isaac Moses Dec 9 '11 at 17:49
@Isaac Moses, Maybe a professional in a poor country? ;) – David Dec 9 '11 at 17:51
@Isaac - depends on the kind of professionals asking - it could be economists, or developers of a brand new city, who are unfamiliar with transit. – Anjana Dec 9 '11 at 23:14
No, but with LEHD data in the US, the origin and destination end of work trips can be pretty well estimated. Other data about O & D will eventually come from GPS. Presently these are usually modeled. – Anonymous Dec 10 '11 at 20:04

What is typically the most costly part of building a high-speed railroad? Is it land leveling and preparation or the tracks, etc. put upon the land?
added by David Nov 12 '11 at 10:40
link|flag
I think this question is interesting, however it will vary significantly from place to place due to differing land, labour and material costs, therefore I am not sure it is a great example – Stev_k Nov 14 '11 at 16:31
I am actually not sure that it would differ, as I am just asking for the most costly part, and not the specific cost. It could be one of them no matter where it is built, if one of them is significantly more expensive. – David Nov 14 '11 at 21:53

How do you calculate ridership if your train fleet is almost, but not quite, 100% APC-equipped?
added by Isaac Moses Dec 9 '11 at 18:17
link|flag
Good question - I have also seen a similar situation where only a small percentage of a bus fleet is equipped with APC. – Justin Ethier Dec 14 '11 at 18:20
Create this site and post the question, and I'll give you an earful on this subject. :) (Part of the puzzle: stats.stackexchange.com/questions/5706/…) – Isaac Moses Dec 14 '11 at 18:44
Sounds great to me - we just need to get a few more people on board :) – Justin Ethier Dec 14 '11 at 19:38

This question is about transportation of energy. I am though not sure whether it is on topic, which is why I asked. – David Nov 5 '11 at 13:59

I'm not sure this is on topic in my view. I think we should limit this to transport of people and goods. – Stev_k Nov 6 '11 at 3:32
@Stephen That is fine by me. I am glad to have cleared this out of the way. – David Nov 6 '11 at 13:43

Too localized? Depends on specifics of employment contracts and other very local circumstances. – freiheit Dec 13 '11 at 18:09

Hmm... there are many other things that are handled differently from city to city, but it still might be worthwhile to discuss them. Do people think this would be a better question if it was more specific, or does it just get too much into the day-to-day details of how a transit operation is run? – Justin Ethier Dec 14 '11 at 15:20
Of course, the precise wording of the question body would clear things up. I think it's worthwhile to discuss best practices in policy-setting, even if each agency's actual policies are different. – Isaac Moses Dec 14 '11 at 18:39
