What's the difference between Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway?

This is a good question and I'd love to see a map. – SamTheBrand Mar 14 at 6:01

Not to answer an example question, but fun fact, it has to do with size of theatre, not location. Number of seats in the house I think is what determines it. – Abby T. Miller Mar 14 at 14:01
That is in fact it. But like you said, I wasn't going to answer an example question. :-) – Spencer Kormos Mar 14 at 14:12

I live in Manhattan. Does my recycling actually get recycled?
added by streetchalk Jan 19 at 6:02

Why is this Manhattan specific? – Spencer Kormos Jan 19 at 19:22
1
I'm thinking the question can't just be "Does my recycling get recycled." Needs a qualifier. I suppose "I live in Manhattan" is enough. – SamTheBrand Jan 19 at 22:09
5
Or maybe just "Does NYC recycling actually get recycled?" or "In which boroughs does recycling actually get recycled?" – Abby T. Miller Mar 11 at 0:11
@abby I think that could work. – SamTheBrand Mar 14 at 5:53

What is the most quiet public space in New York City, both indoor and outdoor?
added by sfrieds Jan 20 at 21:05
link|flag
1
The answers would be subjective, which makes the format of the question less appropriate. Maybe instead "What are some of the more quiet places in NYC?" But then that's a list question, which is also not appropriate. – Spencer Kormos Mar 14 at 14:15

Is it true that "the water" is the reason NYC pizza is arguably the best in the world?
added by SamTheBrand Nov 10 '11 at 17:31
link|flag
4
I think this is a valid question. I'm a NYer living in LA where multiple pizza and bagel shops promote that their water is shipped from NYC. We should at least try to Mythbuster this and debunk it as urban legend, unless you'd like to ask it in skeptics. – dddppp Jan 13 at 18:16
1
You might have answered yourself about why this isn't valid for this forum. – Spencer Kormos Jan 17 at 19:16
1
Could be true, but I still think this is an appropriate place for it. The question is bound to be asked -- the New Yorkers may as well try to answer it. – dddppp Jan 19 at 3:10
2
This is actually a really good question, and it actually is quite answerable. You can remove the subjectivity and simply ask if the water gives NYC Pizza (and bagels) any distinctive qualities if you want, the fact is that this comes up a lot. – LessPop_MoreFizz Jan 30 at 23:55

What are the cheapest ways to get to each of the NYC airports (Newark, JFK, LGA) using public transportation?
added by sfrieds Jan 24 at 20:53

This question should state a starting point. Would the Air Train be cheaper to get to JFK from Jamaica? Would a taxi be cheaper from Astoria to LGA? I think it should be a little more specific – Anagio Mar 7 at 14:41
A good, but very large question that should probably be scaled down. Also, makes me think we need to draw a line on directions questions. Where is it? – SamTheBrand Mar 14 at 5:50

Pretty specific, and although local, probably better suited for the bikes site. Still a good warning that this forum could invite a wide range of "Is X illegal?" questions. – SamTheBrand Mar 14 at 5:44

MTA FASTTRACK: Is it really going to "work" and result in fewer total delays in the long run?
added by Domingo Ignacio Galdos Feb 4 at 8:33

A little subjective and "Quora-y," but can probably be reworded to elicit an objective and helpful answer. – SamTheBrand Mar 14 at 5:40
...What are the criticisms of the MTA Fasttrack program? – makerofthings7 Mar 15 at 14:41
I'd be very impressed if someone did some independent analysis to answer this question, but I know it would never happen. Why? Because the information would be really hard to find and ... who really cares anyway? – foson Mar 28 at 13:20

@samthebrand sanitation rules for batteries are different everywhere. I'm assuming you don't have to put "in NYC?" on the end of every question on the NYC site. – Michael Pryor Feb 15 at 20:03
As long as the site auto-appends New York to the meta title, then SEO-wise, I guess you're right ;-o – SamTheBrand Feb 15 at 20:58
As long as the answer was NYC related such as a link to nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/wasteless/… it would be fine – Anagio Mar 7 at 14:43

added by SamTheBrand Nov 10 '11 at 16:51

This could be good as long as the question is detailed enough to make it objective, not subjective. (i.e. "here is what makes a bridge difficult to jog across - traffic, length, lane organization, etc) – Abby T. Miller Dec 12 '11 at 15:51
