When (and why?) did it fall out of fashion to wear formal hats at all times?

Are history of fashion questions on topic? – Abby T. Miller♦ Jan 12 '12 at 21:22
1
Are you referring to top hats/bowler hats in particular? History of hats could be a huge topic/tag! – Seth Rogers Jan 12 '12 at 21:44
1
@Abby Atlantic City in the 1920's, too - (I'm addicted to Boardwalk Empire). Everyone's got hats. – Laura Jan 12 '12 at 21:55
1
Clearly everything we know about hats we know from period TV series. – Abby T. Miller♦ Jan 12 '12 at 21:56
2
@Abby I'd consider history of fashion questions on topic, particularly with respect to formalwear (I'm a bit of a history buff and a traditionalist though). This question even has a counterpoint: Given the history of wearing formal hats when getting "dressed up" is it still acceptable now as a matter of personal style? – voretaq7 Jan 13 '12 at 1:26

Or perhaps, more broadly, "What are the rules about buttoning men's waistcoats, vests, and suit coats?" – Abby T. Miller♦ Jan 12 '12 at 21:23
@Abby What about women's suit coats? Am I supposed to go by the same rules as men's suit coats, or can I just do whatever I feel like? – Laura Jan 12 '12 at 21:34
1
@Laura I have no idea! Could be rolled into this question or be a separate one. – Abby T. Miller♦ Jan 12 '12 at 21:36
@Laura I'd spin off the question about women's suit coats - there might be a whole different set of conventions (for example I've noticed most gentlemen unbutton and/or remove their jackets when sitting down, but it's more of a mixed bag opposite with ladies) – voretaq7 Jan 13 '12 at 1:29
1
@voretaq7 agreed. Definitely enough info and differences for two separate questions. – Laura Jan 13 '12 at 16:52

pssssst! Seth! Sock garters! -- probably a whole tag in and of themselves. (they won't help for casual wear / shorts though) – voretaq7 Jan 13 '12 at 1:31
@voretaq7 I would totally wear sock garters with shorts. What are you saying??? :P – Abby T. Miller♦ Jan 13 '12 at 15:13

There is a better way to word this question, but hopefully people know what I mean. – Abby T. Miller♦ Jan 12 '12 at 21:16
This is actually a terminology question...the term you're looking for is "button-down" but a lot of the American public uses "button-down" (incorrectly) to refer to a shirt with buttons down the front (it actually refers to the collars being "buttoned down"). Without buttons, they're usually just called "dress shirts". I think this is a good question, though, given the lack of clarity on the terms, even though this is sort of general reference-y. – Laura Jan 12 '12 at 21:57
1
@Laura the button down collars come from playing polo! That is a thing that I learned last year. Apparently Americans are the only ones who wear those sorts of shirts with formal suits. (Here we are answering an example question before we even get to open the site.) – Abby T. Miller♦ Jan 12 '12 at 21:59

I think this question is relevant in light of the discovery of undergarments in the Austrian castle. Not much is known about underwear before 16th century (and even from 16th to 18th century, there are still some questions due to lack of extant underwear). – lolajl Aug 13 '12 at 12:38

This question is not a good fit to our Q&A format. We expect answers to generally involve facts, references, or specific expertise; this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

This question should also include a tag for location; available brands are not the same at the west than the east coast (a few may be but not all) – jclozano Dec 27 '11 at 17:30
1
This question should also include a tag (or title element) for Men's or Women's fashion - and both should be posted :) – voretaq7 Jan 12 '12 at 21:13
3
This question would also need additional clarifying details in the body..."everyday" does not mean the same thing between any two people. Does the OP work in an office (and therefore sit all day), do they spend all day walking around a mall buying clothes, do they prefer to be trendy or functional (or demand that their shoe be both!), etc.? – Laura Jan 12 '12 at 21:53
1
@Laura good point -- the environment matters (formal office, casually walking about town shopping, working in retail/nursing/restaurants where you're on your feet all day). There's probably at least 6 good questions in here :) – voretaq7 Jan 13 '12 at 1:20
Should brand recommendations be considered off-topic? Wouldn't a type of shoe and some factors to look out for be better. (e.g. chukka boot for casual wear as well as comfort/support) – jandjorgensen Jun 21 '12 at 18:08

Nope it has specific items that one has to look for to be a "proper fit" – monksy Dec 7 '12 at 15:11

@monksy Ok, maybe i am missing something here, but "proper fit" of what ? – AshRj Dec 8 '12 at 10:23
This needs to be made much more specific. I.e. "How can I tell if a shirt fits properly?" As it is, it will have one correct answer for every type of clothing under the sun. I.e. a list-question. – Flimzy 4 hours ago
