Might be too basic. – borticus Mar 31 '12 at 13:14
Also very chemistry-related. – LanceLafontaine Apr 6 '12 at 2:59
@borticus why do you think it's so basic ? I think it's a real good question +1 – humboldt May 11 '12 at 21:25
@LanceLafontaine Yes, that why there is a branche of oceanography intituled chemical oceanography – humboldt May 11 '12 at 21:28
I had initially thought that this question might be too basic because the answer could likely be easily found with a Google search, but an expert could probably give a more complete answer. – borticus May 14 '12 at 23:48

In aquaculture, how is an artificial spawning season induced without the use of chemicals or hormones?
added by jandjorgensen Mar 30 '12 at 19:58

I like this question, but I would like to see it asked for a specific animal. For example, "...how is an artificial spawning season induced without the use of chemical or hormones in cod?". – borticus May 14 '12 at 23:50

What are the anatomical differences between warm and cold-blooded sharks? [closed]

closed as not a real question by Robert Cartaino♦ May 9 '12 at 18:05

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form.

Are there really so many anatomical differences between warm and cold-blooded sharks that this is considered overly broad? – Alain May 9 '12 at 23:33
I was trying not to be too wordy, but my original question was more like: "What are the different anatomical structures and/or chemicals employed by sharks for thermo and osmoregulation?" Would that be acceptable? – rebeccabeckybec May 10 '12 at 0:04
@rebeccabeckybec I'm not competent on the subject but this question doesn't look that bad. What will be your answer ? – humboldt May 14 '12 at 0:21
I like the longer version of your question better. The goal is for this site to be useful to experts, so this more specific question seems more appropriate and easier to answer in a helpful way. – borticus May 14 '12 at 23:45
the and/or kind of bother me in, but I agree the term used look more scientific. With or it's look like two question in one – humboldt May 15 '12 at 14:37

Can you help me identify this [organism]?
added by rebeccabeckybec May 10 '12 at 0:07

I can see a site like this being used a lot to post pictures of various sea-creatures or flora and asking for identification. – rebeccabeckybec May 10 '12 at 0:07
It could be a problem that new users on Stack Exchange sites aren't normally permitted to post pictures until they have Rep. – rebeccabeckybec May 10 '12 at 0:08
How would one search for this? What does this solve that a Google Image search (or reverse Google Image search) would not? My concern is not about picture privileges, but that it's not ultimately constructive. – jandjorgensen May 10 '12 at 5:39
@rebeccabeckybec can you post a link when you are new user ? if yes, you can post the link to your picture – humboldt May 11 '12 at 21:32
I think that this type of question could be helpful in a more specific context. For example, there are some species that are difficult to differentiate even for an expert. – borticus May 13 '12 at 20:11

What problem is this question ultimately trying to solve? What would be a "good answer" for this question? – jandjorgensen May 10 '12 at 5:44
There is much controversy surrounding this topic in addition to solid facts. It would be beneficial to those interested in marine mammalogy if this site held a list of solid facts, past and current theories, and ongoing research studies. – rebeccabeckybec Jun 2 '12 at 21:03

There's actually a ton of questions similar to this on discussion sites around the web. They aren't well indexed though - the questions never seem to get any answers. This site is a great source for sample questions. – Alain May 9 '12 at 15:26
May be a valid question if asked in a more factual way that wouldn't solicit opinions. – jandjorgensen May 10 '12 at 5:42
I don't know what your goal is here, but if you don't solicit questions like this this site will never get out of the Definition phase. – Alain May 10 '12 at 18:40
If it requires opinion-based questions to succeed it shouldn't get out of the Definition phase. That's not what SE is for. – jandjorgensen May 11 '12 at 21:44
