Arlen brought up a good point. is this for music specifically or general audio? – quack quixote May 27 '10 at 19:17
3
@herzmeister: Perhaps the title should be " Audio recording and production "? – raven May 28 '10 at 13:46
3
+1 for title change. Audio production for video seems to be getting unanimous support (see gunshot / explosion questions, both +6 -0 right now) – Chris Lawlor May 28 '10 at 13:56

I despise these questions, even on discussion boards. Topics like this would be very likely to come up, and should be mercilessly punted as Subjective/Argumentative. – Aaronaught Jun 3 '10 at 13:42
Same here. No gearporn questions should belong here. – Nik Reiman Jun 3 '10 at 17:08
Suggested Edit: "What frequency range should I be concerned about for monitors for my bedroom studio?" – kevtrout Jun 5 '10 at 18:44
agreed that this is too subjective, but perhaps we could allow questions like - what are the strengths & weaknesses of Alesis M1? – Mark Heath Jul 1 '10 at 15:48
I think that all decently-made studio monitors only have (very) subjective strengths and weaknesses. If you were to ask "What is the BEST pizza shop in the Bronx?", you would get thousands of different answers and different comments about the pros/cons of each one. – Vortico Jul 1 '10 at 20:36

As piano tuning is a whole profession in itself, someone should give them a dedicated SE site. ;-) – herzmeister Jun 13 '10 at 11:40

Would this be on-topic if the question was, "What kind of strings would give me a brighter sound?" – Robert Harvey Jun 5 '10 at 20:43

hmmm I think there might be a lot of questions like this. In this form, it's too general and like the Stack Overflow 'homework questions'. But if asked more specifically, like "How can I make the bass line more concise at 1:45 in this sample", why not? – herzmeister Jun 13 '10 at 12:02
1
@herz: I'd still want to close it as "too localized." It's very unlikely that somebody else will be working on a similar enough track that the answers would be helpful - and even if they were, they'd probably never know it because they'd have to go and download a sample (and $20 says that the link is broken by that time). – Aaronaught Jun 15 '10 at 18:43
I am using my last +1 for this question. This is exactly the question that we are trying to answer here. Really, aren't all other questions just less satisfactory substitutes? – harpo Jun 26 '10 at 8:21
@harpo: Absolutely not. That's equivalent to a Stack Overflow question along the lines of "please read and review these 5000 lines of code." It's exactly what we don't want. It requires answerers to go download some track and write a bunch of semi-subjective comments that don't benefit the community at all, just the person who asked it. Also, these reviews usually require a lot of back-and-forth. This is the worst possible kind of question for a Q&A site; it belongs on a discussion board. – Aaronaught Jun 26 '10 at 14:52
1
@Aaronaught, I certainly overstated my view; the question as stated is too vague, and I have retracted my vote. But suppose it were: Please tell me how I can fix [problem] in [audio sample]. While there is a limit, StackOverflow not only allows but encourages the posting of code. I guess my view is just that actual audio will sometimes be a more efficient way to communicate than words. – harpo Jun 26 '10 at 18:10

IMO, this is a critical off-topic question that's missing from the current list. General music discussion always somehow manages to infiltrate production sites. – Aaronaught Jun 15 '10 at 19:17

I think it's best to focus on recording/production and not delve too much into music theory topics – Nik Reiman May 28 '10 at 9:43
Take a look at stack overflow: its mostly about programing but they allow CS theory questions as well. This site might be different though. – Good Person May 29 '10 at 17:42
hmmm. composing questions are on-topic, yes, but this is very much a beginner question, which seems largely unnecessary. – quack quixote May 29 '10 at 22:57
Wikipedia has ... – Arlen Beiler May 31 '10 at 13:49
It would be a terrible shame to disallow composition and music theory questions! That being said - this is very much a beginner question, so I voted "not a good example". – Andrew Russell Jun 22 '10 at 6:10
