How can I safely winch a vehicle out of a stuck position? (i.e. put something over the line to keep it from snapping if it gets loose, etc.)

perhaps a question like this should include things to check before/after off roading... mild clarification perhaps? like checking the tires or making sure XYZ is in good shape, etc. – studiohack Apr 24 '12 at 16:04
