Where can you find descriptions for things like PLMN and TAC codes?
added by Pieter van Niekerk Jul 11 '12 at 13:44
link|flag
Hi Pieter, It seems like this question might be a bit too broad. Consider editing your question to focus on a problem one might experience that are related to these codes. Remember, our goal is to build a site that attracts experts. With that said, I'm not familiar with those terms, so if this isn't something one can find with a quick Google search, then please disregard. Good luck! :) – jmort253 Aug 10 '12 at 3:30
I don't think this question is too broad. These codes are defined in 3GPP specs and they are very important. – Bob Aug 25 '12 at 22:13
Hi @Bob, they may be important, but questions that simply ask for resources aren't really what Stack Exchange is about. I'm not an expert on these, so it's hard for me to definitively say it's a bad question, but I think it could probably be better. Please see discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/7758/… for more details and to weigh in on the discussion. – jmort253 Oct 4 '12 at 5:43
By its nature, a Telecommunications Stack Overflow will deal more with information than with programming problems. Are you going to ban all questions that ask for information that is available in one of the 3GPP specs, for example? (not saying ay or nay, just asking). On the one hand, I can see the arguments for closing questions that can be googled, but on the other hand, the answers to some of the example questions here, can be found in the specs. – S List Oct 29 '12 at 20:12

I have connected a Network Alchemy POTS unit to an Avaya IP Office call server and it appears to work. Are there any potential compatibility issues?
added by DaveRandom Aug 1 '12 at 13:36
link|flag
This proposal is not for product-related issues. – Bob Aug 25 '12 at 22:11
@Bob Alright, fair enough - in that case the site description should be updated to include that specification. Also please advise where this would be appropriate - if I were to ask this on SF or SU I would be told that telephony hardware is not on topic there. – DaveRandom Aug 26 '12 at 7:58
@Dave - Please weigh in on this discussion if interested: discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/7758/… – jmort253 Oct 4 '12 at 5:47

Why wouldn't this go in "Amateur Radio?" Second, this is a list question, everyones answer is going to be different and correct. – Everett Aug 31 '12 at 5:25
It could but I don't think it's a good idea to split the community because it fits under telecommunications. This is not a list question because I didn't ask for "best". – Usagi Aug 31 '12 at 6:51
I was imagining a possible answer could be the basic components rather than best brands etc. – Usagi Aug 31 '12 at 19:34

The question is still too broad. Basic equipment to do what in amateur radio? Satellite communications? Meteor Scatter? VHF/UHF? Packet Radio? Moon bounce? DXing? The question is still too broad for this format, and REALLY should be in Amateur Radio. – Everett Oct 18 '12 at 14:44

I am building an Asterisk server that connects to 4 T1 lines. Should I get 4 T1 cards or a single quad T1 card?
added by Chris Travers May 15 at 6:32
link|flag
(In other words are classic beginner mistakes questions on-topic here. The answer here looks on the surface like it could go either way, but the fact is that each card will probably send 8000 IRQ's/sec and so there is a significant chance you will never get decent call quality without going the quad-t1 card route.) – Chris Travers May 15 at 6:33

How can I use SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to build a VoIP application for cell phones ?
added by Sheikh Heera Aug 1 '12 at 3:26

<comments removed> Please do not use comments to answer these questions. Comments are here to help improve the questions. This proposal is not part of the Q&A site, and the task at hand is to help define a future site. Thank you. – Robert Cartaino♦ Aug 7 '12 at 21:49
Hi Sheikh, this question seems really broad. One quick Google search will give you the basics of what SIP is about. Instead, can you perhaps edit your example and think of a problem one might have while using SIP to build a VoIP app? Remember, the goal is to build a site that will attract experts. Good luck! :) – jmort253 Aug 10 '12 at 3:20

Experiencing dropped calls after an Asterisk update; the logs don't indicate why, and this only happens occasionally. How do I find the problem?

This proposal is not for product-related issues. – Bob Aug 25 '12 at 22:11

Hi @Bob - From the proposal definition: "...any kind of communication related technologies.". My interpretation was that Asterisk is a communication-related technology using SIP among other things. If that's not correct, then (a) we need to edit the proposal def, and (b) if you have any suggestions for how I can edit this, let me know. :) – jmort253 Aug 26 '12 at 2:48
Is it appropriate to ask this question on Stack Overflow? – Usagi Aug 26 '12 at 3:15
@Usagi - Possibly. But be advised that just because something is on topic on SO doesn't mean it's off-topic elsewhere. If you don't have some healthy overlap, you risk alienating your own community and strangling it in its infancy. One of the things the Stack Exchange community team reiterates to users on new beta sites is "be jealous of your own community." – jmort253 Aug 26 '12 at 5:05
