Answers are not required here, it's just an example question. Thanks for the answer anyways ;) – Creator Jul 16 '12 at 13:35
It's a good question - but can't see how is it related to culture, history or politics of India. Do we need to update the site definition and increase it's scope? – Yet Another User Aug 21 '12 at 20:28
Well it's about Indian government too, if it's not obvious I can change the description. – Creator Aug 21 '12 at 21:08

Hi @jokerdino, I think the point Sann is trying to make is that this question could possibly be answered with a Google search. On Stack Exchange, the best questions are those that show the asker has already done some research on his/her own. Hope this helps! – jmort253 Mar 23 at 20:22

Is 'atheist' an acceptable input when filling in religion, especially in official forms?
added by BinaryNights Aug 4 '12 at 20:40

does this fit in India – Web Developer Jan 11 at 11:32
1
Yes it fits in India because most forms ask you for your religion. Even the visa application form asks for your religion and some of my atheist european connections were weirded out by it. – Ganesh Krishnan Jan 29 at 0:26
This indeed is a great question. Most probably, the police/government will ask an "official" atheist what religion his parents followed. I think @BinaryNights means acceptable as in _acceptablility not required by law, but by the people in authority_. Case in point, try using section 49 during an election. – KK. Feb 12 at 15:51
Ask the concerned authorities/officials... This doesn't fit in India. – ShuklaSannidhya Mar 23 at 12:10

It's the same. What do you mean different? – Ganesh Krishnan Jan 23 at 3:09
2
It is a great question. @GaneshKrishnan it is indeed different here. Most other countries have a single religion and different offshoots of it, like Catholics/Protestents, or Shia/Sunnis. So, there it is a case of the state distancing itself from religion. Here, there are a lot of religions, and the state even considers minority religions as "minority religious communities", which means the government actually helps such communities by grants and aid in terms of land etc. An actual answer, based on research and discussion will be more elaborate, though. This was just off the top of my head. – KK. Feb 10 at 10:59
