Lego Mindstorms Robotics [closed]

Proposed Q&A site for both new and experienced users of the Lego MINDSTORMS robotics kits (NXT, RCX, WeDo, etc). Other users could include the Mindstorms Developer Partners, and various developers of both hardware and software for the Lego Mindstorms robotics platform.

I would have better read a real Lego Q&A site than a specific Mindstorms Q&A one. Indeed, as AFOL community grows, there are more and more groups about specific Lego tricks (like SNOTS ones). I believe changing this group from Mindstorms specific to full Lego universe would raise far more interest. – Riduidel Jul 1 '10 at 10:02
4
@Riduidel: Perhaps. However, the AFOLs in the mainstream area which you speak may have little to no grasp of electronics and computing, which the larger proportion of this proposal is about. Also, I fear that the number of non-robotic lego questions you can ask is limited. Mainstream lego is more about showing off ideas, rather than finding out information. Just my two cents – Eric Jul 7 '10 at 20:11

There are a proposal for general Lego. It might be better to use this with tag mindstorm instead of having a separate site for Mindstorms. – awe Aug 4 '10 at 9:00

Which programming language should I use to program the NXT Brick?
added by muntoo Jun 5 '10 at 23:54
link|flag
According to the comments on this question: "Which software is the best? NXT-G 1.X/2.0, RobotC, NXC/NBC, Java, etc.", this may not be such a great question either. – muntoo Jun 7 '10 at 3:12
If the criteria for "off-topic" includes "too subjective for this forum" then I guess I will vote "off-topic". – afanofosc Jun 9 '10 at 14:26
Well the point in a Q&A style site is to provide definite answers for questions. Without any requirements for the language being stated, the answer becomes purely a matter of opinion. – Eric Jun 9 '10 at 17:54
I think this is a fine question and one I would like to see answered when this forum starts. I have felt at times that a question should be given the benefit of the doubt if it is good or not. The system will sort out the "on-topic" vs "off-topic" questions well. Just to clarify, there are some questions that really are bad, but this one (as indicated by the votes) is borderline. – John Burley Jul 28 '10 at 5:29

Hmmm... I said, "not a good example", but that's cause I'm not sure whether this is supposed to be like a forum (where there are polls to post your own opinions) or just answers (like FAQs), so no opinions. – muntoo Jun 6 '10 at 5:24
2
No, that's a "great off-topic example". The question is too subjective, and it's the kind of question we don't want. There's no right answer. Don't confuse "not a good example" and "great off-topic example". Hover over them for a more detailed description of what the options mean. – Eric Jun 6 '10 at 7:56

I think this is a reworded version of my earlier question, "Which programming language should I use to program the NXT Brick?". – muntoo Jun 6 '10 at 5:22
1
I'd say that this is a rather subjective question, and therefore is an off-topic example. – Eric Jun 6 '10 at 7:01
I think that this requires a long answer. Maybe an article could be written on this... (Steve Hassenplug already did one, but it may be slightly outdated.) You could have the person go through a series of questions like: New to programming? (Yes/No) -Yes: Try NXT-G -No: C/C++ (NXC, RobotC), Java (Lejos), Robolab, etc? -Free (NXC, Lejos)? $1 - $30 (RobotC)? $31 - $100? But anyways, maybe this isn't such a good one. I'm not sure. – muntoo Jun 7 '10 at 2:58

Is the Robofest junior game competition too hard this year?
added by Clinton Blackmore Aug 14 '10 at 23:30
link|flag
Sure you don't mean robocup junior? Also, at this point it is more important to vote on existing questions, rather than add more. Until we have 10 questions with 20 votes each, we can't progress. The more questions suggested, the smaller the number of votes per question. Aside from that, robocup is pretty much the same every year. So not a very good question. – Eric Aug 16 '10 at 2:29
No, I meant Robofest - robofest.net. The challenge changes every year. I thought it wouldn't hurt to add some more questions, especially off-topic ones, but I see that you are right -- we need to all select a number of representative questions in order to move forward. – Clinton Blackmore Aug 16 '10 at 21:08

I think this would be for the nxtasy forums? (Where you can report bugs to John Hansen.) I'm not sure, but for the time being, I've voted for "not a good example". – muntoo Jun 7 '10 at 3:08
However, we might be able to enlist John Hansen into the site! Are you sure you didn't mean off-topic? Have a look at the alt text for the various voting options. – Eric Jun 7 '10 at 6:37
I'll run out of off topic, and this isn't that bad, so "not a good example" is good enough for now. – muntoo Jun 8 '10 at 2:19
I think you're confused again. Not a good example means that my question is a poor example, and I shouldn't have posted it as an example (so I lose 2 reputation). Off-topic means that my question is a great example of what we don't want on the site (so I gain 5 reputation). I'm happy with you going with NaGE, but I'm just clarifying what's "good" and "bad". – Eric Jun 8 '10 at 10:46

Buy another kit? I think this question is too vague. Such a question needs more detail. I think this would be "not a good example". – muntoo Jun 7 '10 at 3:15
The vote for "not a good example" means you think the question is a) too similar to other questions, b) uninteresting, or c) adds nothing to the discussion. If I had more votes I would say it was a great on-topic example. – afanofosc Jun 9 '10 at 14:22

Would the WeDo kit be a viable basis for a CNC conversion for a mill or lathe?
added by retracile Jul 9 '10 at 20:30
link|flag
I'm a little unsure of this one; on the one hand, it's a project I may undertake, on the other hand, perhaps it's too broad and should instead be broken down into detail questions, or perhaps the end-application is relevant to the discussion. I do think WeDo should be fully on-topic for the site though. – retracile Jul 9 '10 at 20:34
Yup, I agree. It would make sense to include the WeDo range. And there's certainly nothing wrong with asking about real life applications! – Eric Jul 10 '10 at 21:34

I want my robot to __. Can anyone give me a program? – mulhaq_2005 Jun 12 '10 at 4:12
I think the questioner was thinking the "A,B, and C" would be replaced in the real question with specifics. Seem like a reasonable type of question to me. Maybe @Eric could give an example. – John Burley Jul 28 '10 at 5:45
The general point is the questioner is looking for a program that does a specific task without even attempting it themselves. Were the question Why is the code to make my robot do A, B, and C not working, or I want my robot to do A, B, and C. _How should I do it_?, it would be a different matter... – Eric Aug 5 '10 at 4:20
