Lego Mindstorms Robotics [closed]

Proposed Q&A site for both new and experienced users of the Lego MINDSTORMS robotics kits (NXT, RCX, WeDo, etc). Other users could include the Mindstorms Developer Partners, and various developers of both hardware and software for the Lego Mindstorms robotics platform.

I would have better read a real Lego Q&A site than a specific Mindstorms Q&A one. Indeed, as AFOL community grows, there are more and more groups about specific Lego tricks (like SNOTS ones). I believe changing this group from Mindstorms specific to full Lego universe would raise far more interest. – Riduidel Jul 1 '10 at 10:02

@Riduidel: Perhaps. However, the AFOLs in the mainstream area which you speak may have little to no grasp of electronics and computing, which the larger proportion of this proposal is about. Also, I fear that the number of non-robotic lego questions you can ask is limited. Mainstream lego is more about showing off ideas, rather than finding out information. Just my two cents – Eric Jul 7 '10 at 20:11

There are a proposal for general Lego. It might be better to use this with tag mindstorm instead of having a separate site for Mindstorms. – awe Aug 4 '10 at 9:00

People do ask this question occasionally. Great on-topic example. – muntoo Jun 7 '10 at 3:10
One of the benefits of StackExchange is that if people try to ask a question that is a duplicate, it warns them before they ask, and shows them possible duplicates. That's one benefit over the forum: few repeated questions. – Eric Jun 8 '10 at 10:49

What should I do to get my NXT Brick out of SAMBA mode? ("Clicking Brick Syndrome")

Good question. A lot of people have trouble with that. – Eric Jun 6 '10 at 7:02

It might be better to say "how can I get my NXT to turn on - all it does is softly click" A lot of people may not know what SAMBA mode is. – afanofosc Jun 9 '10 at 13:59
Good point. – Eric Jun 9 '10 at 17:52

added by muntoo Jun 5 '10 at 23:59

I somehow overlooked this question and wrote a similar one "Where can I find more instructions and programs to build robots?". In addition to websites there are many books out there that provide similar material - Xander's question on this is very specific so I'm wondering which would be the best approach: a very general question or several more specific ones. – Jetro de Château Jun 11 '10 at 8:40

Great on-topic example. (Except I can't vote anymore. :( ) – muntoo Jun 7 '10 at 3:02
Is it more on-topic that the other ones you voted for? You can subtract your vote by clicking again. The aim of the votes it to vote for the most on- and off-topic examples – Eric Jun 7 '10 at 9:42
Yeah, I know (about the un-vote). I'm still deciding. EDIT: OK, I subtracted the I2C one, added to this. – muntoo Jun 8 '10 at 2:11
The problem is there are many more than 5 great examples of on-topic questions. There are very few examples of great off-topic questions. I have votes left in that category. – afanofosc Jun 9 '10 at 14:23

What are some good ways to debug a program?
added by user1882 Jun 12 '10 at 17:52
link|flag
Not a good question for this site. – muntoo Jun 19 '10 at 2:49
@muntoo !! why not? to debug a program you might want to use sounds, or use the display to print values of sensors as they go by,,, i believe debugging should be a topic of discussion as the ultimate goal is to make people better at using the NXT ..no? @user1882, perhaps tweak the question to "...to debug an NXT-G program?" – bazmarc Jun 19 '10 at 13:06
The question needs to be made more specific; as it stands, it's better suited to SO. – retracile Jul 10 '10 at 12:34
I don't think it has to go on StackOverflow. After all, we're talking here about debugging a NXT program, and not a generic one. As a consequence, it is suited here. – Riduidel Jul 12 '10 at 7:46

added by retracile Jul 9 '10 at 20:18

... which would probably be my first question on the site :) – retracile Jul 9 '10 at 20:31
Would probably be good to change that to "NXT-G" IDE. After all, any software for the NXT is an NXT IDE. I would vote this on topic, but I've already used my five votes. – Eric Jul 10 '10 at 21:33
@Eric: updated as suggested – retracile Jul 11 '10 at 0:25

added by Eric Jun 5 '10 at 19:53

Should the proposal questions really be this generic? There are a lot of "fill in the blank" options for this question that I think would be great off-topic examples and a lot that I think would be great on-topic examples. – afanofosc Jun 9 '10 at 14:25
Same as John said. I voted "great off-topic example" EDIT: wouldn't "not a good example" go with what he said? – mulhaq_2005 Jun 12 '10 at 5:43
