What kind of Single-Malt Scotches are a good recommendation for someone new to Whisky?
added by Jon Lin Aug 5 '12 at 17:30

I would prefer to see "what kind of whiskey would you recommend for a beginner?". I wouldn't recommend any single malt scotch for someone new to whiskey. – AutoSponge Aug 11 '12 at 21:33
3
I think it's a good question, but needs to be careful to avoid being to subjective. I'd recommend a lowland scotch to a whiskey beginner. – freiheit Sep 19 '12 at 22:48
We should consider very carefully how much we want this QA site to be in the whisky-recommendation / whisky-review business. This has the potential to overwhelm the site, and not necessarily in a good way. – mattdm Mar 4 at 21:14

True. Maybe something like "how does an aerator impact taste..." or similar. – DBUK Nov 6 '12 at 13:41

What is the typical production process (recipe) for a single malt whiskey?

How should questions like this be moderated? Will it be the same stance as homebrew, or is home distilling out altogether? – anthony-arnold Mar 19 at 6:13
@anthony: note this is not really a homebrewing question, but more like a very fundamental theory question. I guess homebrewing whiskey requires quite a few sacrifices and shortcuts, but this one is more of the kind of "What is whiskey?" defining the subject through process to obtain it. Of course we can expect homebrewing questions too, just noting this one is not an example of these. – SF. Mar 19 at 17:15

Can anyone identify which whisky I remember from [this description]?

I imagine there could very well be a lot of questions like this. From having conversations with people this kind of question pops up a lot: "ooh I had a lovely one, can't remember the name but it was really smokey". – DBUK Oct 23 '12 at 7:26
Thanks DBUK, what interests me is whether it would it be a suitable question for the site. Normally shopping questions aren't suitable for stack exchange, but this doesn't feel like a shopping question to me. However it also doesn't feel like a good fit for a stack exchange question either, since I can't see how it could help future visitors or be easily discoverable for those few people who are interested. Since this is intended to work out whether this type of question is suitable, please vote (up or down) or close. – Mark Booth Oct 23 '12 at 7:52
I understand the pain for someone searching for that one amazing whisky they had one night and forgot the name of, but I definitely agree that it isn't a good question for a stack site, but I can imagine lots of them popping up (and needing closed). – DBUK Oct 24 '12 at 9:20
@DBUK - As well as voting down, people might want to vote to close this question or flag it as needing closing. As I implied earlier, I don't mind loosing a little rep to down votes if it helps clarify what is a good question for this proposal. – Mark Booth Oct 24 '12 at 10:13

This is a common "reverse search" question - given characteristics identify name. There's a plenty of "identify this game" on arqade, "Identify this book" on SciFi or "identify settings/filters/postprocessing effects" on Photography, "Name this dish" on Seasoned Advice or "identify movie" on Movies. This kind of questions is unanswerable for machine searches and Q&A sites are the only that can really answer these. Of course in case of whiskey and how vague and subjective the descriptions can be, it may be far harder to answer than in others. – SF. Apr 8 at 12:10
