Neuroscience

Proposed Q&A site for methods questions on histology, electrophysiology, and molecular biology; to potentially provide a wealth of unpublished negative findings or failed attempts that other neuroscientists would benefit from without having to endure the frustration.

In training mice or rats in an operant task what sensory cue elicits an optimal learning curve?

This question needs to be asked more carefully, but even in a very face-value form it has generated interesting discussion on CogSci.SE where it (like all of this proposal) is completely on-topic. – Artem Kaznatcheev Aug 23 '12 at 19:21

What are some artificial neural network architectures with biologically plausible accounts of neurogenesis?

This question is off topic for this site. It is not technique focused. This question would be more appropriate at Cognitive Sciences. – John Jul 26 '12 at 2:59

@John if computational modeling is off-topic as not technique focused, does that mean this site is only for experimental neuroscience techniques? If so, you should rename the proposal accordingly instead of the misleadingly broad Neuroscience title. – Artem Kaznatcheev Aug 9 '12 at 4:39

Are there imaging techniques that track specific neurotransmitters?

Immunocytochemistry for transmitters or related transporters and synthetic enzymes is a common way of doing this. A more direct way of observing neurotransmitters is formaldehyde-induced fluorescence. – Anonymous Aug 2 '12 at 13:31
Excellent suggestion. Artem, it would help focus answers if you narrowed your question to a particular neurotransmitter, and perhaps indicate context of imaging (i.e. in vivo or in vitro). – John Aug 3 '12 at 4:29
Thanks @John, even the broad version of this question has generated interesting answers on CogSci.SE. – Artem Kaznatcheev Aug 9 '12 at 4:26
It is unclear what is meant by tracking here. Do you mean tracking the movement of a particular neurotransmitters in live tissue or just staining of a particular molecule? – Anonymous Mar 23 at 3:17

It is more neuroscientific than cognitive in nature, so not entirely clear to me that it belongs in Cognitive Sciences. – Anonymous Mar 23 at 3:18

@Anonymous that is the common misconception about Cognitive Sciences... it is not restricted to CogSci, it is just a bad name and all of neuroscience is on-topic there. The popular neuro tags are: neurobiology and theoretical-neuroscience – Artem Kaznatcheev Mar 23 at 3:54
