Is the friend zone sexist?
added by Eva Jul 24 '12 at 3:04

1
@user37324 It has the word "feminist" in the question. – Eva Feb 24 at 18:36
1
This question is on-topic, as many feminists do believe the friend zone is sexist. – Chris Feb 26 at 4:19
1
This question would be exponentially better if it said, "Is the friend zone sexist?" – satyrwilder Mar 12 at 10:03
1
@Chris If the friend zone isn't actually sexist, then a good answer would explain why it isn't. The question will get the same answers as the one you suggested. – Eva Mar 14 at 3:35

Does feminism help men?
added by Eva Jul 24 '12 at 3:07
link|flag
just a wording issue, but 'how can that be true?' sounds to me like you can't believe this to be possibly true, thus not very neutral. how about 'how does feminism help/benefit men' ? – derpione Feb 25 at 11:22
@derpione It was intended to sound less incredulous more unsure. Maybe "Does feminism help men?" might work better. – Eva Feb 26 at 0:57
@derpione, we can't expect everyone who asks a question here to be neutral. Everyone has their opinion about feminism, and yes, this will show through their questions sometimes. The idea is that the answeres can set the record straight with any false assumptions made in the questions, and highlight any prejudices made. – Chris Mar 13 at 0:44

How can women in male-dominated STEM (science/technology/engineering/math) fields be a role model towards younger women and girls?
added by lemontwist Feb 2 at 14:19

A similar question could be "How can we encourage boys to think of accomplished women as role models?" If I hadn't used up all my questions, I would've added that. – Eva Feb 22 at 9:38
This is western-centric, in many parts of the world those fields are not men-dominated. – gerrit Feb 23 at 14:33

Is it the feminist position that child custody rights should favor women during a divorce?
added by Chris Feb 18 at 9:38

1
The premise of this question is flawed. Neither liberal nor radical feminism take that position, and never have. – satyrwilder Feb 20 at 7:35
1
"Neither liberal nor radical feminism take that position" is an answer to the question. The question doesn't suppose that such a position is taken, but asks if such a position is taken. – Chris Feb 20 at 14:13
4
@satyrwilder This is just an example question that could potentially be asked on the Feminism site if/when it goes into beta. Please hold off on discussions of the validity of the premise till then. – Anna Lear♦ Feb 20 at 18:28
@Anna Lear/Mod - I miss clicked, upping your comment by accident. – Matt Randall Feb 21 at 8:10
3
@Chris - Sorry for the ambiguity, Chris. I feel that, due to the way it is phrased, this question pushes the edge of context. I expect both liberal and radical feminists would downvote it as a derailing attempt, and at the very least I expect that it would be re-framed, ie "What is the feminist position regarding child custody during divorce?" This would improve the question, and from my experience, I predict both liberal and radical feminists would perceive it as legitimate. @Anna Lear - An answer would have constituted a 101 link; see my suggestions for improving this question. :) – satyrwilder Feb 21 at 8:35

@user37324 Localized means it only applies to a small group or an incredibly rare situation. It can apply to a specific country or region, but as long as the question will benefit more than a small subset of people, it's fine. – Eva Feb 22 at 21:23
@user37324 So end it with "at universities in [country]"? – Eva Feb 22 at 21:49

The phrasing of this question detracts from it's relevancy to the topic, and I believe many feminists would reject it as an attempted derail. Maybe this question can be improved to increase its relevancy. – satyrwilder Mar 1 at 17:59
2
@SF - Advice is difficult without simply answering this question, so bear with me and I'll do my best. Analogy: if you asked on Stackoverflow, does function dereferencing make Js better than PHP, and also PHP is very insecure? Basically, this is a very common pre-101 non-question of questionable sincerity. It seeks validation (aka confirmation bias), not clarification or information. Some resources: leading question, false dilemma, and loaded language. :) – satyrwilder Mar 4 at 7:02
1
@SF - Instead, you could ask something like "What does a feminist social model of equality look like? Does matriarchy play a role? Is there a difference between the liberal and radical vision of equality?" -- or something to that effect :) – satyrwilder Mar 4 at 7:07
2
@SF - Hmm, afraid you're getting colder ;) (I would clarify the programming analogy but it would become it's own derail.) I understand the concepts you are trying to express, if you would like to pursue rephrasing this question, feel free to chat me. :) – satyrwilder Mar 5 at 21:50

I don't think there's a constructive way to answer that question. All that comes to mind is "Yes, sexist pigs are stupid" or "No, feminazis are stupid." Each claim could be substantiated with roughly equal quality of supporting evidence. (Except for the bit about fascism.) – Eva 2 days ago

Should feminists in Australia push to allow for female conscription during war time, as opposed to male only conscription?
added by Chris Feb 26 at 4:16

Why is this question down-voted? It highlights a socially constructed inequity between men and women and I wonder what the feminists position is on such an inequity. – Chris Mar 16 at 7:08
2
@Chris: For the same base reasons any other Stack question gets downvoted: too basic, repeated elsewhere, off topic, and / or out of scope. Usually a combination thereof and no small amount of suspicion of deliberate trolling. That's why I keep telling you, feminists will probably downvote questions perceived to be any degree of deliberate derail (and feminists have, as a rule, seen a lot of deliberate derailing. And there are plenty of 101 sites half a google away.) This is exactly such a question. Maybe you can clarify it, but feminists as a rule oppose war period, so I don't see how... – satyrwilder Mar 19 at 18:48
How can feminists oppose war. If a country attacks the country you dwell in, wouldn't feminists support self-defense? Would feminists say, here take our country, we won't fight for it. Are you also implying feminists in America would have let Germany continue to kill all the innocent Jews? – Chris Mar 19 at 23:42
1
@Chris: Are you asking for clarification regarding the problematic nature of your question, or just an answer to it? While I have the latter, the mods have hardly been shy about strict enforcement of the rules and, consistent with a life experience spent in a society that conditions misogyny on a deeply subconscious level, are applying enforcement efforts far more severely than any other proposal I have ever seen. In fact, more severely than any several proposals combined. (It is a deeply disturbing thing to observe.) Anyway, if you want an answer, I'll chill in chat a bit. – satyrwilder Mar 20 at 2:07
