You would need cause for search, it's a borderline question. You could ask them to open it. If they refuse, you may have cause. – Marc DiMillo Jan 26 at 8:58

@marcDimillo - This is not an actual question that needs answered but rather a sample of the types of questions that would be asked on the site. – Chad Jan 27 at 2:34

This is a list question. You should probably change it to Is there anything a fan work author can do to protect themselves? – Chad Feb 20 at 18:11
@Chad: short, finite list questions are okay. AFAIK this one would be 2-3 items long at worst. – SF. Feb 20 at 23:57

So then, wouldn't every answer on this site be "you need to consult with an attorney"? Also, questions which can be answered with a basic yes or no are generally frowned upon. Even worse, this question can't be answered. It depends on a variety of factors that you should consult an attorney about. Hey, what do you know, there it is... – animuson Sep 30 '12 at 22:19

No this site is intended to provide people a general guide to their legal questions. An attorney can tell you the same answer that someone put on your question but only attorneys are generally allowed to give you legal advice. So like I said it only a guide to help. – Ramiro Oct 5 '12 at 4:57
In my US state giving legal guidance without being an attorney might be construed as practicing law unlicensed. I agree with Animuson... this question is one that should only be answered by an attorney, and it seems that EVERY question on this site would have to be answered by an attorney since it claims to offer legal guidance. The creator's attempt to qualify it as ONLY legal guidance seems misguided as providing legal guidance is the exclusive domain of the legal profession, by definition. – Michael Stocker Nov 26 '12 at 7:39

we can give an interpretation of the laws as we understand them. Legal advice is you have a claim/do not have a claim/are not breaking the law etc – Chad Jan 27 at 2:33

Legal questions are divided into two arenas, "questions of law" and "questions of fact". When you have a trial, the jury is there to answer questions of fact, the judge is there to answer questions of law. I think that if questions are all legal based (not fact based), then this site could work. Its useless to have a site where every answer is "consult an attonery". But if people just ask questions about what the law says about something, precedent, etc. then I think this could be a VERY useful site. – Javid Jamae Oct 18 '12 at 17:23

@Javid: Does your comment relate to the question? (if so, how? - not attacking but curious, I don't really see connection, but then I'm a total layman) – SF. Jan 17 at 9:11
@SF - Yes, my questions was a "question of law". My comment was pointing out that if the site is composed of these types of questions, then it could work. But, if the site is a bunch of "questions of fact" then it wouldn't work, because facts of a case or an individual's circumstances cannot be adequately summarized in a single question on a Q&A site (IMHO). – Javid Jamae Jan 17 at 22:07
