Are you kidding? This is an excellent question. Accuracy of forecasts is a simple factual answer, and statements of expectation of improvements in accuracy could be made without too much subjectivity based on past rates of improvement (much as people commonly discuss current rates of computing power, and make predictions based on them) – naught101 Feb 7 at 6:08

Yes that kind of strange to have close this question. You can clearly reply to the current accuracy of the weather model. For the expected accuracy following the Moore's law you can give some indication of the accuracy in 5 years. – humboldt May 11 at 23:10

Why not? A lot of people wonder about this, so I think likely to be asked at some point, and nobody but a meteorologist can provide an authoritative answer (if there is any authoritative answer to be given). I could see it being marked off-topic as too basic, but it's not "fun." – David Zaslavsky Jun 30 '10 at 17:03

It's not that great of a question. Description of the site is "interest in identifying and understanding weather related phenomenon". I wouldn't say totally off-topic, but this is similar to "what's the weather in Costa Rica". – felideon Sep 16 '10 at 16:01

Cool question. I would definitely be interested in this. I'd guess you'd have to somehow measure the angle between the sun and the moon, and work it out from there.. – naught101 Feb 25 at 3:07

This is on-topic, at least as much as the question "How accurate is forecasting today and how much improvement...", which has all on-topic votes as of this writing. Neither question is about "identifying and understanding weather related phenomenon" but both are about forecasting. The up-voted question, though, is about NWP (implied); just as important is interpreting the output and delivering it. Why shouldn't that aspect (the public face) of meteorology be fair game as well? – Paul Jul 20 '11 at 6:33

With a little more context, this question could be valuable. A huge part of the science is being able to disseminate information to the general public, and a specific example of advice like this would be relevant to the topic. – Joe Moore Feb 28 '11 at 21:06
