I have the necessary developer tools on my Linux box, now how do I integrate a unknown device into compiling Android ROM (AOSP/CM/AOKP)?

Really broad. If this site isn't catering to experts (who know they need drivers etc.) then I don't see room for it on the SE network. – Matthew Read Jan 10 at 18:15

Do I need to learn Java to write an Android ROM, or can I write it in something like C?

Too basic IMO, if it's not obvious that Android's in C then a glance at the official site will tell you. – Matthew Read Jan 10 at 18:13
There's more to it than that. You could theoretically write it in anything that can be compiled into the processor's machine language, (I assume tablets and phones use an ARM processor), so if someone made a special compiler that took Java and compiled it into raw ARM machine language, then the answer to the question is far less basic than you think it is. – phillid Jan 12 at 1:28
