3D Graphics

Q&A site for 3D graphics creators

Well, in that case I feel the name of the group is not quite there yet. There is more to 3D than just modeling. There's texturing, surfacing, rigging, lighting, rendering and of course animation. So one suggestion would be to just remove "modeling" from the name or replace it with "3D Art Techniques and Software", to make it more appealing to animators and other CG professionals - only a small part of this industry is actually modeling. (to be continued...) – hexygen Sep 19 '10 at 1:11

But if we go this far, I don't see a reason to exclude 2D Techniques and Software. I am trying to think of what is best to the people of this industry, and let's face it - we probably won't have enough traffic to justify more than one of these sites. It would be very difficult to proceed with a different site for 2D artists (compositors, illustrators, etc). I think eventually we must have one unified site for all, and since your proposal is much more popular than the other proposal it is safer to go with this one. So maybe you should call it CG as well. We're all on the same boat here... – hexygen Sep 19 '10 at 1:30

FYI, the proposal title has changed (and descriptive text) from 3D-Modeling, to 3D Graphics. Hopefully this will be more clear, to people seeing only the title, what the site is for. Also note that it is still 3D :) Although being more inclusive can be good, I simply think that 2D/3D is a very natural dividing-line for this subject. The software is different, and the issues/questions will be totally different - there's just not enough overlap. – Cyclops Sep 28 '10 at 2:16

Suggesting this as an off-topic question, although a more focused "how could <feature> from <film> be implemented in <package>" might be an interesting on-topic question. Unfortunately it looks like I've hit the limit for questions so can't create that. Bah. – Peter Boughton Jul 5 '10 at 18:13

This is meant to be another off-topic Question. To clarify the difference in off-topic and NaGE (not-a-good-example) - off-topic are questions that you don't want on the site, but might be asked (so we need them to help define what not to ask). NaGE are everything else, for example "*can vegans eat honey*" - although this obviously doesn't belong on the site, it's also not likely to be asked, and doesn't help define the specific unwanted Questions. My particular Question is obviously argumentative and subjective, which we want to discourage on the site (well, I do), so it's off-topic – Cyclops Jul 7 '10 at 14:08

@Midhat, yes, that's why it is off-topic (and not NaGE). – Cyclops Aug 2 '10 at 13:54

This could be be more discussion-ey than could get a clear answer, but I think something like "Has anyone had success using a tablet when using 3D software like Blender?" might help. – Kara Marfia Sep 7 '10 at 23:47

Relative and argumentative. – MPelletier Aug 15 '10 at 21:41
This question is vague. Questions should provide more context, such as "What are the most usefull 3ds Max Plugins for particle systems?" – Richard Dorman Sep 14 '10 at 12:22

I sure hope this sort of flame doesn't find its way into the site when it's online. – muhuk Jun 26 '10 at 15:35

@muhuk, that's why this question is voted off-topic - it's an example of what we don't want on the site. Having said that, there will always be flames - just a fact of human nature... – Cyclops Jun 26 '10 at 16:00

@muhuk: Cyclops has it exactly right. I'm trying to come up with questions that could possibly be asked, but are good examples of what is "off-topic" for the site. You need examples of both on-topic and off-topic questions for the proposal to advance. – Beska Jun 26 '10 at 16:52
It is off-topic...and the Blender UI is still a nightmare :) – Rusty Sep 3 '10 at 19:45

@user1901, I don't know if you voted "not a good example" or someone else. But just to make clear - this is an example of an off-topic Question. The kind of question you do not want on the site, and would vote down. If you agree with that, you should vote the box that says "great off-topic example". This is not the actual site, but only a demo, where we try to clarify good and bad questions. This is a good example of a bad question, if that makes sense. :) – Cyclops Jun 13 '10 at 17:54

Sigh... yet another user who hasn't read the FAQ. @bobobobo, before you vote on questions, maybe you should read the FAQ, at top-right. Search for off-topic questions. – Cyclops Aug 16 '10 at 23:31

I am torn between Maya and Softimage, both great programs. Which is better for modeling? Do you guys/gals use both? Is Ice just used for particles?
