Buying used what? Used car? Used textbook? – le_garry Apr 25 at 13:13
It's a general question. Possible answer could contain for example which products are safe to buy used, and where you should keep care of. – w4rumy Apr 25 at 17:47

How can I send postal mail for free in [The Netherlands]?
added by THelper Apr 24 at 9:17
link|flag
Is there a possibility that someone would offer this by free? – Silke Apr 24 at 15:19
@Silke Yes, there may be options depending on the country you live in. In the Netherlands you can use something called "antwoordnummer" and I've heard that in the US blind people, congressmen and (some) military personel can send mail for free. – THelper Apr 24 at 20:25
+1 Good to know ;) – Silke Apr 25 at 7:20

In many countries mail with wrong postage is returned to sender. Just put the mail in the box with addressee's address written in sender's place, and it will be "returned to sender". Whether they must or are willing to pay for it is an entirely different matter. – SF. Apr 25 at 23:44

cheap hotels? :) – warren Feb 21 at 15:35

I think this is a valid question as there are more answers beside "cheap hotels." Things like AirBnB and nightly rentals on Craigslist have expanded the set of answers available here. – MCeley Feb 25 at 20:20
It's also useful to get to know couch surfing, hospitality club... Or alternative traveling to farms where you work and get a place to sleep and food. In the week you enjoy the new environment and during weekends you can visit some new places. Btw, does anybody know a name of such organizations? – Silke Apr 22 at 13:17

I want to go backpacking in [Australia] for 6 months and earn some money over there to pay for my accommodation and food. Do I need a work permit?
added by THelper Apr 24 at 8:57

I think this is off topic here. Asking about wether or not you need a work permit does nothing have to do with cheap alternatives. – w4rumy May 8 at 10:23
@w4rumy. I agree. I was deliberately trying to find the bounderies of this proposal. – THelper May 8 at 10:58

Is it safe to stay in hostels when travelling in Europe?
added by Dan Seibert Apr 25 at 22:09
link|flag
What do you mean with "safe"? Safe in terms of security? – w4rumy May 8 at 10:21
Europe is far too broad to cover this easily. On one end of the spectrum you have ultra-safe countries like Norway or Switzerland, on the other Belarus, Albania, Kosovo - places where "a tourist" is a rather dangerous occupation... – SF. May 9 at 20:41

Which brand [specific sports equipment] that doesn't sacrifice safety for cost savings is the cheapest?
added by SF. Apr 26 at 6:17
link|flag
This is notorious with bicycles: bicycle frames of known brands that fail QA get fitted with cheapest parts and sold dirt cheap under disposable no-brand names in countries where the sellers can get away with it. They are inherently unsafe - every single bicycle failed safety tests. Picking a bicycle "a shelf above" makes a paramount safety difference, but telling "Safe inexpensive simple" apart from "failed QA, more fancy model" is not trivial. – SF. Apr 26 at 7:01

Where to find the cheapest food products in [country]?
added by w4rumy Apr 30 at 10:09

I think this could be a community wiki question. The answer would contain a list of food products (bread, milk, butter, etc.) and the price of them in different (chain of) stores. – w4rumy Apr 30 at 10:10

What's the cheapest mobile tariff with internet in [country]?
added by Łukasz Lech Apr 24 at 5:42
link|flag
I think this is not a good question because it will only be valid for some months maybe and then be outdated. Also, "cheapest" depends on personal use. So there is no overall answer. – w4rumy Apr 24 at 6:46
the same applies to the whole proposal. – Łukasz Lech Apr 28 at 13:18
Still, cheapest depends on personal use. For someone uses 10MB a month there is a different "cheapest" tarif than for someone who uses 2GB per month. – w4rumy Apr 30 at 10:08

Isn't this more a question for other stack exchange sites like Home Improvement [diy.stackexchange.com/] or DIY projects[area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/48770/… – Silke Apr 24 at 15:21

@Silke I agree that the question would fit perfectly with the proposals you mention, but since this proposal description also mentions DIY to avoid hiring someone I thought I'd try a DIY question here. Note that there are more sites that have overlapping topics (for example both sustainability SE and gardening SE allow questions about composting) – THelper Apr 24 at 20:22

I wonder if an alternative would be viable: "my tap/car/washing machine needs a [specific part] replaced and it costs an arm and a leg. Are there any inexpensive alternatives?" – SF. Apr 26 at 6:39
