Woodworking and Carpentry

Proposed Q&A site for the craft of chopping up pieces of dead trees into differently-shaped pieces, and boldly joining said pieces together

I disagree with Phillip on this, there is a continuous range of things between fine woodworking and DIY. The original stackoverflow site has questions over a large variety of programming languages, no one member of the site has an interest in all of them, but the site works well with a relatively broad definition of topic. We should do the same here or else risk having too small a pool of users. – John Knoeller Sep 4 '10 at 16:53

My proposal is basically "rec.woodworking" for the stack exchange system. There is already a DIY site which has made it all the way through commitment already. – Master Of Disaster Sep 5 '10 at 4:14

I like the description but I think a serious description should be created because it will help better define the site. I also think that the name should be changed to either 'Woodworking' or 'Carpentry' but not both since the words have the same meaning. – andrew Jan 21 '11 at 9:28

A question about whether or not a tool is worth the money would be a question that I think a lot of woodworkers have, regardless of skill level, as this tends to be a rather expensive hobby. – awied Aug 12 '10 at 21:38

How can you make a perfectly round ball, from a cubic piece of wood without using any powertools?
added by googletorp Jun 11 '10 at 9:24

Define the subjective "best" - best in terms of speed, smoothness of surface, cheapest method, using a lathe or other power tool or not, etc... Otherwise it's not a good example. – Adam Davis Jun 12 '10 at 2:44
@Adam Davis look at the question again. The best way to get it perfectly round, e.g. the shape. The question is not about speed, texture or smootheness, but about shape. – googletorp Jun 12 '10 at 5:06
@Googletorp - You don't seem to understand what I'm saying. There is no "best" way. There are a million ways, and while many of them are great, none of them are provably better than the others because they all give you what you want - a perfectly round ball. The "best way" is, by definition, subjective - that means it depends on the situation, and factors that are not explained in your question. If I have a CNC lathe, then I know that the "best" way is to program it, throw the wood on there, and let it rip. If I only have a pocket knife then the best way is completely different. – Adam Davis Jun 12 '10 at 7:44

These questions need to be perfect examples, or at least shining examples, so it's better to remove any kind of ambiguous wording like "best". – Master Of Disaster Jun 12 '10 at 8:05
I changed question some and removed the "best" part of it. – googletorp Jun 14 '10 at 12:02

You don't have to answer the questions yet. If you think this is too simple (or too stupid) a question for experts, you can mark it as off-topic or "not a good example". – Master Of Disaster Jun 12 '10 at 3:10
@kinopiko - I know, I just do this to amuse myself. Flag the comments if you feel they are unnecessarily distracting. – Adam Davis Jun 12 '10 at 4:49

Yeah, kind of subjective, and isn't really about whether anything is correct or incorrect. Better would be: What should I look for while building a...? – Jon Smock Jun 16 '10 at 19:55

I voted this as off-topic because I wouldn't want to see this site devolve into a repository of links to free woodworking plans. I would want real advice on techniques and tools, and not a bunch of questions like "can somebody else google for me where can I find free plans for X" – lecrank Jun 23 '10 at 1:07
