Healthcare IT

Beta Q&A site for healthcare IT professionals and solution providers.

Announcements

3
I think that the definition of Healthcare IT (Or Healthcare IS, HIS, HCIS, etc.) is inclusive of all provider types, so wether you're a doc in a box, Dr. 90210, the nursing home down the street, a large Academic medical center, the community hospital, critical access, the St. Paul Island (AK) clinic, or a home health agency, you'll want to come here for your answer. For the record, I'm a hospital IT guy. – rsimplicio Jun 24 '10 at 0:08

Where to find a TLA glossary would be a good question, actually. There are plenty out there...question added! – Sam Erde Jul 31 '10 at 13:15

Note, since a lot of people committed awhile ago, it helps our commitment score if people were to recommit to the proposal. – Steve Wranovsky Jun 7 '11 at 20:27

By offering a very reliable support model and keeping the total cost of ownership low compared to the licensed software options. Just like JBOSS, MYSQL and Red Hat did it on middleware, data and OS stack. Check out Mirth ( open source healthcare integration engine) mirthcorp.com - my gut says, they will be a success story – Saravana Rajan Jun 28 '10 at 21:54

I would vote "great on-topic example" if this question simply read "how can IT reduce medical expenses." Primary care providers and hospitals need to be able to manage difficult expenses before they can pass savings on to patients. – Sam Erde Jul 31 '10 at 13:10

similar to area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/6433/…, but with a different focus – warren Jul 26 '10 at 20:06
This question is too vague, and perhaps vacuous. – stack Jul 29 '10 at 23:14
@stack - why would this be "vacuous"? The title may be a little vague, but it's one asked in a variety of other contexts as well - do developers really care about PCI or FISMA compliance? Does the act of developing require knowledge of the standards to which the code will be subjected? I don't know if it does or not, hence the inquiry. – warren Jul 30 '10 at 12:53
It is a given that the act of developing requires such regulatory knowledge. But the question, as phrased, roughly boils down to a question on the merits of including the coders in design and testing discussions. Indeed, you seem to admit that the question is fairly general. Here's how I'd answer this: "If the PM gives the developer a requirement, then it's important to the developer. If the tester tells the developer he/she didn't meet a requirement, then it's important to the developer." This is a fairly high-level management question. – stack Jul 30 '10 at 13:48
@stack - yes, if the requirement is given to the dev, it's important to them: the question is whether or not they need to know from where the requirement has come - hence asking the way I did :) – warren Jul 30 '10 at 15:09

What is the adoption level of Integrating Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) integration profiles at healthcare providers?

From a healthcare vendor perspective, trying to come up with some product planning ideas, I think this would be a useful question to ask to really see how important IHE adoption is in products and how widely it is used in the industry. – Steve Wranovsky Aug 13 '10 at 18:57

The question is interesting, but more philosophical in nature. – Clay Jul 15 '10 at 13:03
I think its a good off-topic question, also. Interoperability, specifically in the use of DICOM and HL7 is an issue, and this question would be a good way to educate both vendors and providers on the issues involved. – Steve Wranovsky Aug 13 '10 at 18:58
