Vegan

Proposed Q&A site for vegans, or anyone considering becoming vegan
flag

Announcements

Quick question on the focus of this site: it's very difficult to separate veganism from animal rights, and almost certainly you're going to get a boatload of AR questions on a site like this. Should they be treated as on-topic or encouraged on the site? – Juliet Jul 9 '10 at 2:46

Instead of having a qna about veganism, why not have a qna on eating habbits and/or alternative eating habbits? – DForck42 Jun 7 '11 at 15:30
3
I would participate in a site with a broader definition: Vegan, vegetarian, whole-foods, organic. For health, animal rights, or environmental reasons. – Flimzy Aug 27 '11 at 8:35

Is wool vegan? If it doesn't harm the sheep, why not?
added by Jordi Bunster Jun 18 '10 at 19:54

A better question would be, "What are the implications for sheep involved in wool production?" or "How would you respond when someone asks you whether wool is vegan?" This board will be uninteresting and unproductive if it's just a bunch of arguments about how to define "vegan". It will be better if the board has questions that real vegans are interested in discussing. – Mame Jul 10 '10 at 20:39

Off-Topic: This question would work on the meta per @Mame 's comment, it will be uninteresting to re-hash the same arguments over and over – mfg Feb 24 '11 at 21:05

Similar critique as addressed in wool question; this is a question asking about definitions. To get an objective answer the question should be about specifics issues, such as implications of production, environmental impact, etc. – mfg Dec 20 '11 at 16:01

Awesome, controversial question – DForck42 Jul 5 '11 at 19:44
Unhelpful hypothetical question. Perhaps if you add some hypothetical details, the bioethical issues raised might be able to be directly addressed. – mfg Dec 20 '11 at 16:04

What are vegan substitutes for eggs in baking recipes?

Depends on the recipe! This question should be more specific. – Mame Jul 7 '10 at 17:20
Questions specifically related to some combination of [ingredients], [substitutions], and [cooking] should be on the cooking stack exchange. The more general version of this question is more appropriate to this venue. – mfg Dec 20 '11 at 16:06

Almost certainly you're going to see plenty of questions like "what are alternatives to [insert something here]", and these sorts of questions are definitely of interest to people making a move to a veggie diet. – Juliet Jul 9 '10 at 1:33

Nothing can be proven scientifically. Theories can be falsified. So there can not possibly be a good answer to this question. – xubuntix Oct 24 '11 at 12:23

What books would you recommend to learn more about animal rights?
added by Juliet Jul 9 '10 at 1:03
link|flag
There's a lot of overlap between the animal rights movement and veganism. A strong commitment to animal rights is almost always a de facto commitment to veganism, but the reverse isn't necessarily true. I personally think AR questions should be treated as on-topic. – Juliet Jul 9 '10 at 1:38
@Juliet that logic is backwards. If not all vegans are into AR, then not all AR is on-topic to vegans. If some vegans are into AR, then some AR is on-topic. Still, AR seems on-topic – mfg Feb 24 '11 at 21:08

Are free range hens and dairy cows treated more compassionately than animals raised in factory farms?
added by Juliet Jul 12 '10 at 4:04

I think this is off-topic due to the subjective nature of the question. Also, this relates to animals (presumably raised for food) rather than veganism itself. – Peach Nov 6 '10 at 18:42
@Pea There is bound to be a tie-in between persons X wanting vegans to justify X's behavior, as in 'well at least you do free range.' It seems some background knowledge would benefit vegans for this purpose; but would it benefit this prop? – mfg Feb 24 '11 at 21:23
