This question is not a good fit to our Q&A format. We expect answers to generally involve facts, references, or specific expertise; this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

I voted to close this because there are going to be as many answers as there are people using fundraising software, rather than one useful specific answer. – paulmorriss Oct 20 '11 at 16:02

This question could still be helpful to organizations that are looking to switch to digital methods of tracking or wish to find out other options that may be better than their current choice... – Alexandra Nov 2 '11 at 5:06
@Alexandra: The criteria for SE questions is not "would it be useful?" but rather "Does it have a single, precise correct answer?" And sadly, I think this question fails that criteria, as do many other useful "list"-type questions. – Flimzy Nov 26 '11 at 19:17

I actually love this question, but struggle with whether this should be in the section. – DKMonroe Aug 26 '11 at 2:23
Is the reason that this is off-topic because of "open source projects"? Would it be off-topic if it was "Why do people contribute time to <charity>?" – Joseph Barisonzi Aug 30 '11 at 21:54
I thought contributing to open source projects was philanthropic. – Wikis Aug 31 '11 at 4:35
I think "Why do people contribute to <x>?" is a bad question, because to answer it accurately, you'd have to take a survey of everyone who contributes to <x>. And what real-world problem would this help you solve anyway? – Flimzy Nov 26 '11 at 19:16

I am curious why this was considered to be a "not a good example" by someone on the board. When I am working with a non profit considering a social entrepreneurial strategy this is always one of the most important questions. And the answer is fact based. – Joseph Barisonzi Aug 19 '11 at 19:18
I think this is VERY important for nonprofits. They need to think about how to become less dependent on deficit funding, but also, not derail their mission - a fine line. I have experience in this area and it is counter-intuitive. – DKMonroe Aug 26 '11 at 2:20

Where can I find information on "best practices" for online fundraising?

I think that this is on-topic-- but a bad example. By asking "where to find" all we get will be links to other sites. The purpose of the Q&A board is to solicit answers from the experts on the site. I would propose that if the question was "What are 'best practices' for online fundraising" then it would be a great example. As is -- it is not a good example of either on or off topic. – Joseph Barisonzi Aug 30 '11 at 21:53

This sounds like a list-question. And the number of answers will be an exponential product of the number of open-source software packages in existence. – Flimzy Nov 26 '11 at 19:17
