This may sound similar to board games proposal, but I think a game like Chess deserves the respect/audience of a dedicated site instead of being clubbed with Cards, Scrabble, Carrom etc. – Binoj Antony Jun 19 '10 at 12:40

@Brent, please read my first comment. The same logic by which you have many languages have their own proposals instead of having only one proposal named Languages and likewise for many other topics like Phone OSs (Android, iOS etc), Software (DotNetNuke, Selenium, etc), just look around to find so many examples of this. Above all there is no site where chess enthusiasts can ask questions especially for analysis etc to be answered. Even GMs/IMs can become members and help out. I cant imagine such experts or even users doing this on a generic website. – Binoj Antony Nov 18 '10 at 18:05

I don't know how but I think it did in Europe, originally chess didn't have castling when it was created in India. But the King has a Knight move (which gets nullified when you get a check) and hence many of the fianchetto openings are called Indian. Its a bit of a pain but the strongest engine out there - rybka can be downloaded and played in an open source chess player like Arena. rybkachess.com/index.php?auswahl=Rybka+engine is the link to engine, playwitharena.com is the software you can use – Satyajit Sep 14 '10 at 23:29

pawns move capture diagonally because they were pikemen. They kept their shields in front of them so they could walk forward while stabbing to the sides. :) – CrazyJugglerDrummer Sep 18 '10 at 17:46

It depends on how you are playing correspondence chess, if you are not moving your pieces and analyzing with your eyes it could be helpful. But if you are moving pieces over the board you get that tendencies. Also playing under pressure and winning a won game are characteristics that you can learn only OTB. – Satyajit Aug 13 '10 at 17:13

	Openings are are like fashion they keep on changing. Pre 2004 1.e4 used to be the default from beginner to world championship matches but now at the top-levels 1.d4 is taking over for ex: Anand-Kramnik match 2010 – Satyajit Aug 25 '10 at 0:41
