Why is a game like Farmville and Mafia Wars both appealing and addictive to so many people?

I almost made this question an off-topic. To me this group is more about the theoretical aspects of games, and while "appealing and addictive" is a factor in differentiating games, this question seems to have too much emphasis on the typical "carnal". I.e., a better question might be "Since games have become tagged as addictive, how can we might be able to build a better appreciation of their beauty into a workable aesthetic to avoid their dismissal as an counterfeit art medium?" Wow, what a mouthful. Just a thought. – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 7:59
never understood mafia wars - keep clicking stuff until you level up and get a reward. then click stuff some more.. terrible game – Tyler Mar 14 at 17:13

What are some bright examples (or ideas) of the transmission of mythology uniquely stated within the cybernetic medium of gaming?
added by Jamin Jun 24 '10 at 6:30
link|flag
A response might be "the way the ghost girl in Ico compels the player to bring her to safety, invites interaction from the player in a way that cannot be done with traditional media". I admit "mythology" might be a little strong, since I think so many few games can serve an example of transmitting deep meaning effectively, the same way say a classic book can. – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 8:07
Or, in Katamari Damacy, the kooky Japanese humor is used to invite the player into a world where he can interactively become a part of that made-up world, by balling up random objects in a attempt to meet a ridiculous goal (by interacting, the player is invited into becoming a part of the mythology in an active way). – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 8:13

Are there any studies about positive/negative effects of [game genre]?
added by Wayne Werner Jun 24 '10 at 14:47

This would be like asking, are there any positive/negative effects of reading? It is kind of irrelevant, and belongs to discussion groups moralizing on video games. Besides, this is a group about games in general, not just video (I haven't heard anyone talk about positive/negative effects of checkers). – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 8:19
1
Actually it would be like asking "are there any positive/negative effects of reading [scifi/fantasy/romance]?" This doesn't ask anything about video games specifically - basketball is a different genre game than checkers is a different genre than texas hold 'em is a different genre than 20 questions - which is of course a different genre than a video game. – Wayne Werner Jun 28 '10 at 1:48
This sort of thing should be included since we could discuss how to design games to accentuate or mitigate certain effects. Look at the 2004 study showing video games may improve surgeons eye hand coordination. msnbc.msn.com/id/4685909 – cyotee Jul 26 '10 at 5:22
This question is specifically asking about studies. If academic papers are off-topic why would “philosophers, academics, and theorists (ludologists).” even participate? You’d be saying their work is off topic. – user179700 Aug 5 '11 at 6:34

What makes [game] (not) so much fun?
added by Wayne Werner Jun 24 '10 at 14:51

A better question might be why do games seem to focus so much on fun, compared to other mediums of expression - novels, movies, even comics. These mediums are fun as well, but something about games, their interactive nature, seems to position them uniquely among other art forms where this "fun factor" emerges. – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 7:32

What are all the variations of rules to [game]?
added by Wayne Werner Jun 24 '10 at 14:52
link|flag
This would be more of a technical "game theory" question, as an answer might require in-depth analysis. More appropriate might be, "How might the number of rules in a game effect how fun it is", or "Is there an example of a game that has little or no rules but still feels like a game?" – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 7:38
Too vague. Is it about imagination (i.e., giving new rules examples), or about about listing existing rules (there can be so many)? – Wernight Sep 28 '10 at 20:23

This seems more of a social and practice question. Kind of like, "What books do you read to get you inspired about rock climbing?". Maybe a possible alternative would be "What about games can influence players psychologically, such as playing make-believe, forming social play networks, or controlling their dreams? " – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 8:05

I was toying about whether or not to make this completely off-topic or to structure it in more of a "please help I/someone I know is addicted to [game]" But I think both would be off topic. Then again questions about the addictiveness of games might not be. – Stephen Jun 25 '10 at 0:24
This should be directed more towards a gamers group, especially as it is more of a social request, not an inquiry into game concepts. The idea of addiction in games from a theoretical standpoint could be discussed though. – Jamin Jun 26 '10 at 7:24
