@rlb.usa The site proposed here is for all Project Management questions. I see it as more generic compared to the "Systems Engineering & Management" proposal. – tucson Jul 6 '10 at 12:20

It looks like this is only for IT project management. The topic should reflect this. Otherwise in general project management can refer to projects outside IT industry such as a building construction project, govt. policy implementation project etc. – pratikk Sep 25 '10 at 9:54

I've added a question with a different phrasing in hope of unifying our perspective on this topic. Does your vote on this question agree with your vote on area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/10947/… ? Can this question be consolidated with the others in a way useful for this site's definition? – Huperniketes Oct 10 '10 at 14:01

Why are tools off-topic? Other than the problem with people pushing product adverts disguised as answers, which tends to be a problem on all the sites, not just this one? – DaveParillo Sep 30 '10 at 19:45
This may be subtle, but I think this question is 'on-topic'. Not great, but on-topic, while area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/10947/… is off-topic. Asking about alternatives to a tool is more of a SU question. – DaveParillo Oct 2 '10 at 0:26
You think sending users to another site to find the answer is the best solution? Are experienced PM software users more likely to be here or there? – Huperniketes Oct 2 '10 at 1:11
Depending on the question, sending people to a different site is the best response. This site should try to limit it's responses to questions that can only answered by a person with some degree of experience in the field of project management. That's why I think this question is 'on-topic'. The other question I referred to can be answered by google. – DaveParillo Oct 2 '10 at 2:42

How do you integrate new team members half way through a project?
added by Perry Wilson Aug 24 '10 at 16:12
link
The answer is very related to the processes you used for your project development and team size. - You should have an orientation plan about your project describing your processes, environment, and state of your project. - You can make new member the body/pair of an old member. - You may also prepare social activities for all of your team members. After all learning technical details is up to capability of the new member. – atoygar Oct 13 '10 at 11:01

Why are people flagging this as off-topic? It's a community wiki type, but seems like a valid beginner type question about risk management. – DaveParillo Oct 2 '10 at 2:55
It's better to add such a general risk: Loosing for example 10% of your team members before the 80% of project completeness. Reasons could be many like quiting job, having very bad performance, etc. So after adding this risk you could create some recovery plans about how to get new team members in the middle of the project. – atoygar Oct 13 '10 at 10:49

It was closed as part of an automated migration of off-topic to close votes on September 29, 2011.

I don't see how this is Off-Topic? If I'm a project manager and I want to look at adding new tools to my toolbox, where should I go to ask opinions? AskAboutProjects is about sharing knowledge of the overall project management experience. Who else should I ask about if Scrum is good for my given situation? If I go to a Scrum forum they'll all say yes, if I go to a classic waterfall driven group, they'll say no. If I ask PMs in general, I have a better chance getting a real world answer. – Joel Bancroft-Connors- PMP Oct 17 '10 at 19:02
Its vaguely subjective. There is many sites which aggregate project sucess statistics, and from this you can surmise if a project method has worked or not, in general. – scope_creep Oct 20 '10 at 16:09

I am as yet not sure we should discuss different PM software tools on AskAboutProjects. I don't want to end up shifting through sales pitches. – Stephan Sep 29 '10 at 20:48
Agree with Stephan. Mostly. I think it should be OK to ask a valid project management question that has a software component as long as the question is mostly about PM. This question is purely a launchpad for people to wax poetic about their favorite tools - plenty of examples of this already exist on AskAboutProjects. – DaveParillo Oct 2 '10 at 0:30

FOr the same reason we shouldn't give a construction PM advice on what type of cement to use on a bridge construction project, this site shouldn't dispense advice on software lifecycle. – DaveParillo Sep 30 '10 at 19:35
@DaveParillo, No offense, but I think advice on methodologies doesn't correspond well to advice on construction materials, and I disagree with your conclusion. Methodologies are being reviewed and adopted by several non-software specific projects. I think this question is too subjective, and should instead ask whether project scope and size or other factors are relevant to methodology selection. But we'll get a lot of methodology-related questions (eg, scope, phases, etc.) and should welcome them. – Huperniketes Oct 10 '10 at 14:31
@Huperniketes: none taken! I think your advice about changing the question is spot on. I'm just concerned about this site giving advice to people who then might think they have all the information they need to proceed. – DaveParillo Oct 20 '10 at 0:30

I tend to agree with you Danny but for great off-topic question. It's not related to PM but when you do PM for software development , you need to motivate programmers to do these sort of things. It could also be a SO question. – Philippe Jul 14 '10 at 4:07
It's a great question for a Software Dev Management site, and a great off-topic question for this site, because it's not about project management, it's about man management, or software development. – gkrogers Sep 23 '10 at 14:14

This would be a great on-topic question because it deals with motivating team members to value a task they would rather not do. In addition, since this proposal is a reboot of askaboutprojects.com, it includes software development management topics such as this. – Huperniketes Oct 1 '10 at 22:07

I'm not sure this is a PM related question. Dealing with technologies is not directly tied to PM. – Philippe Jul 14 '10 at 4:17
I think it's great off-topic question. It will sooner or later appear, but I do consider it as out of scope for project management site. – pawelbrodzinski Jul 14 '10 at 8:09
Introducing a team to different technologies or processes, whether they're experimental or just new to the team, can significantly affect their productivity and the completion of the project with respect to the budget and schedule. Wouldn't that be on-topic? – Huperniketes Oct 5 '10 at 21:00
I do not agree with people calling this question off-topic. Because any technology change in the progress time of a project will absolutely affect project plan as Huperniketes said. This effect could be in a good or bad way. So a PM can want an integration report from the development team leader, according to this report PM will decide. In my point of view if team take good design decisions at the beginning of the project there won't be any need for another technology. Maybe for projects lasting 2 or more years you can make a meeting for recent technologies once a year. – atoygar Oct 13 '10 at 11:12
