I think this question has the same issues than this one, and the results may broadly differ from one country to another. I'm not sure whether this would be a good fit for this stack. – avazula Feb 11 at 13:50
If the answer would very by country, then defining the country in the question should be sufficient to make it work on this stack. – James Jenkins Feb 11 at 18:43
I agree that this needs to vary by country. I left it out because it's just an example, but would expect to see similar questions for various countries in practice. – y6nH yesterday

This has been seriously proposed by researchers. See for example: jaacap.org/article/S0890-8567(17)31682-9/fulltext Answers to a question like this would ideally link and quote from research reviews articles, rather than giving their own review of the research. – curiousdannii Feb 10 at 23:33

This question is not a good fit to our Q&A format. We expect answers to generally involve facts, references, or specific expertise; this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

1
What type of answers would you expect for this? I am imagining either the question would be very broad (allowing "I'm autistic and here's my experience.." where all such answers are "right"), or just quoting diagnostic criteria. – Em C Feb 5 at 2:46
@EmC I was more going for the "academic research" tag with, indeed, a list of diagnostoc criteria (with maybe notes that NT people can also have some of the "symptom") – Noon Feb 5 at 7:28
4
In that case, it might be better if the question read "What are the diagnostic criteria for the autism spectrum" – Rainbacon Feb 6 at 17:38

Is there a sociological explanation as to why many autistic people identify as LGBT+?
added by Noon Feb 4 at 16:26
link|flag
Although I know you and I understand what you mean here, I think this question may benefit from a bit of rewording so as not to imply that LGBTQIA+ identification is related to/implied by autism. Do you mean that it seems that a non-negligible part of the autistic community also recognize themselves in the LGBTQIA community, and that you're looking for possible explanations as to why is that? – avazula Feb 11 at 13:49
Even if my question was implying that "LGBTQIA+ identification is related to/implied by autism", I believe this would still have its place on this stack. I'm part of both community myself and I don't mean to offend anyone but I also don't see what's the problem with my way of saying things. (note that my answer would have been totally different if I wasn't part of both those community) – Noon Feb 11 at 14:06
I understand, I'm part of both communities too and it seems that there's a non-negligible portion of autistic people who identify within the LGBTQIA+ scope. I think it's just the wording that troubles me, maybe something like "Is there a sociological explanation as to why many autistic people identify as LGBT+?" would be better? What do you think? – avazula Feb 13 at 10:04
@avazula I changed it, thanks for the suggestion :) – Noon Feb 13 at 10:12
The use of "many" implies an absolute number, but that would have the same answer as why many of whatever goup of people identify as such: because many people in general are LGBT+. If it were to ask about a relative number, it would presume that the proportion is different from that of the general population too. Either way, I don't see how this question is helpful. – Nij Feb 15 at 2:20

As a person from country X who is Y years old, are there any benefits to getting a formal autism diagnosis? [closed]

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form.

This likely depends a lot on the specific country and on many personal factors. I think that the question when diagnosis is helpful is valid, but this seems too broad at the moment. – Discrete lizard Feb 11 at 10:09
To respond to @Discretelizard remarque, maybe you could edit your question to ask "Knowing that I'm from country C and that I'm X years-old, are there any benefits to getting a formal autism diagnosis?"? – Noon Feb 11 at 14:26

I'm not sure why this one is downvoted so heavily? I read it as being in a similar vein to other diagnosis-related questions that seem much more well-received. Is it because the topic might be Googleable? – TheTinyMan Feb 8 at 15:26
@TheTinyMan that, and it seems like it would already fit on Psychology (maybe even a duplicate of this) – Em C Feb 9 at 0:33

Could the downvoters explain their choice? This might be a better fit for interpersonal skills, maybe you can focus on a part of small talk or something in that context that people have a hard time with if they are neurodiverse. Additionally, each neurodiverse person probably has a different answer- maybe narrow down to what specific type of neurodiversity? – ElizB Feb 4 at 19:36
