What creative new fundraising ideas have you used to balance budget cuts at your public library? [closed]

This question does not relate to the topic of the proposal.
It was closed as part of an automated migration of off-topic to close votes on September 29, 2011.

This might be more on-topic if it were re-phrased something like "What types of fundraising are libraries conducting?" – John H Jul 15 '10 at 14:56
Sorry, thought "library" would be assumed given the board. I have amended the question. Budget cuts are always a topic at public libraries. – B White Aug 25 '10 at 12:30

This could be relevant if they were asking about continuing education on a specific library-related topic, such as cataloging. – zemkat Jul 15 '10 at 19:48
'zactly. It's harder to write bad questions than I thought ... (but necessary). – Melissa Jul 15 '10 at 19:57

Does anyone use a collection agency to try to "shake down" patrons with heavy fines or missing books? If so, how does it work for you?

What works and doesn't work as far as trying to get out of a late fine?

This kind of question would not only allow for some humorous anecdotal comments but will also help inform library patrons and staff what to look out for! I like it, thanks for adding! – Emily J Jul 13 '10 at 6:05
I think this question might be on topic if it was asking about how to deal with library patrons trying avoid a late fine or library policies for waiving said fines. That is, asking from the library's point of view. – moberley Jul 20 '10 at 22:33
Why does it have to be from the library's point of view? The description says 'libraries and library lovers' ... not all of us here are librarians. (well, I sort of am, but it's complicated). Besides, just knowing what sort of absurd excuses people come up with makes sure you're prepared to rebut them. – Joe Jul 22 '10 at 13:46
1
But Joe, trying to get out of a late fine is actively disrespectful of libraries. I also think questions don't need to be from the library/ian's point of view (as a non-librarian library lover myself), but I think it's okay to want them to be from a library-positive point of view. Much as I try to avoid late fines myself, when I do rack them up I try to think of them as a donation to the library. – In the Booley House Jul 22 '10 at 15:20
The point I was aiming at was that this question doesn't come across as an expert question. I hadn't thought of it but the previous commenter's description of "disrespectful" is apt. On the other hand, as Joe and Emily J both noted example excuses could be helpful to users of this site, which is why I voted "not a good example" instead of "off topic". – moberley Jul 22 '10 at 16:40

The problem with this question, as phrased, is that there's no problem to solve. You already love LibraryThing, so why are you asking? Without a target in mind the result will be people saying "I love Safari!" and "I love GoodRead!" which isn't useful knowledge for the community. – billba Jul 15 '10 at 21:21
I agree that this needs a re-phrase, even if it's just dropping the first sentence (and the "community wiki" notice, which doesn't apply here). – M. Alan Thomas II Jul 16 '10 at 20:13

Which book (or what-have-you) turned you into a book-lover? What are some good titles to snare a wily reluctant reader?
added by kitukwfyer Jul 15 '10 at 16:57

I figure these are more or less the same question....or at least that they have the same answers. – kitukwfyer Jul 15 '10 at 17:04
I think this is too broad a question. I would refine it significantly - e.g. good titles to snare a ten year old boy who loves video games. Even then there will be lots of answers, but at least there's a chance of generating a few great candidates, e.g. Ender's Game. – billba Jul 15 '10 at 21:18

I agree in theory, but in my case, I was an introverted ten-year-old girl who liked painting and couldn't stand the sight of blood--and only got hooked by military historical fiction with lots of gore, profanity, and other things my mother would not approve of....Anyhow, that was why I went so broad....I hated (and continue to hate) all of the books the "experts" thought I should like. – kitukwfyer Jul 15 '10 at 23:54
I think someone needs a "read irresponsibly" t-shirt. ^_^ That being said, I'm having a hard time deciding if this question is overbroad, just right, two different questions, or what. – M. Alan Thomas II Jul 16 '10 at 20:04
Lol, yeah, but then again, if I were asking this for real, I'd probably have a specific person in mind....and a lot more characters available with which to clarify. :-) – kitukwfyer Jul 17 '10 at 4:38

not really a question for the definition phase :) – warren Jul 27 '10 at 18:40
This question is about Stack Exchange rather than this particular topic. As each person has a limited quota of votes to cast and example questions to propose, it would be better if this question were replaced so that the votes go to questions that help define this site proposal. – moberley Jul 30 '10 at 5:27

This reads more like spam than a question. I don't think that there's anything to be learned by voting on it; there's no chance that it would be considered an on-topic question. Hence, I'm voting "not a good example". – M. Alan Thomas II Jul 16 '10 at 20:11

Agreed! The last thing I want is to have to wade through this type of junk question. – Gillian Jul 16 '10 at 20:14

I think a better off-topic example might be something like "How can I get a library to buy this great new book?" – moberley Jul 20 '10 at 22:25
For the definition I think this needed to be addressed. I can think of at least two of these I reported as inappropriate back on Unshelved Answers. – Mr. Fish Jul 25 '10 at 18:36
