Launched Q&A site for professional photographers, photo editors, and serious enthusiasts.

One hope would be to incorporate communities involved in 1.0 sites such as photographr.info, as well as those from more traditional photography "message board" sites. – Jaydles Jun 1 '10 at 18:51
4
I would include photoqna.com in that as well. – adrianbanks Jun 1 '10 at 22:57

@Adam, I think the votes can speak to the wishes of the community. StackOverflow has not suffered from a mix of professional and newbie questions. There are situations (such as photojournalism) where somewhat straight-on flash is unavoidable. I'd be quite happy as a photographer of 10 years to see a succinct answer to the red-eye question, merely to complete one's knowledge on the topic. – Rog Jun 3 '10 at 22:51

What's the best photo-editing software and why?
added by Arlen Beiler Jun 1 '10 at 20:35
link
Answers need supporting reasons. – Arlen Beiler Jun 1 '10 at 20:35
I would say on-topic. – Arlen Beiler Jun 1 '10 at 20:37
2
Can you make a question on-topic, just by adding the words, "and why" to it? area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1265/… – Robert Harvey Jun 1 '10 at 20:40
1
off topic since different branches of photography have different needs. What's the nest photo editing software for (defined purpose) would be OK. – efikim Jun 2 '10 at 0:33

Can you recommend a good photo printer?
added by Robert Harvey Jun 1 '10 at 23:54
link
What's wrong with this... it's a request for suggestions. not a "Is Printer X better than Printer Y" – Eoin Campbell Jun 2 '10 at 9:06
2
I think it's breadth makes it subjective - the only criteria are A) prints photos - which probably leaves hundreds of printers, and B) is good - which is an entirely subjective measure. I think you need a question where more objective facts and variables narrow the field meaningfully. "Can someone reccommend a wifi printer under $400 that can print 16X11" without spooling the paper 180 degrees?" – Jaydles Jun 2 '10 at 19:24
@jaydles: If I give my laundry list of requirements, doesn't that still make it a bad question? – Robert Harvey Jun 2 '10 at 19:26
@Robert - It might. But I'd argue that at a minimum, it's getting less bad. "Is there a widely-used program with professional-grade photography workflow and photo-management tools that runs on OSX and can sync with my Apple TV?" has a right answer. "What's an awesome photo program?" doesn't. Don't get me wrong, the first question is far from a great, site-definining question, but I think it'd pass muster (and not need to be closed) because it's answerable without inserting opinion. The fewer the possible answers that are factually correct, the less subjective the question becomes. – Jaydles Jun 2 '10 at 19:42

What's the best step-by-step process to create a pencil sketch effect using photoshop?

too subjective. Probably better to phrase as "Can you suggest a good Photo-2-Pencil Sketch Tutorial for Photoshop ?" – Eoin Campbell Jun 2 '10 at 9:04

Not a valuation site. Subjective. Localized in space and time (ie, depends on where and when you sell it). Won't be valid in 1 month. – Adam Davis Jun 3 '10 at 2:47

Very similar to Is this photograph any good?, but I like the other better. For example, it's an actual quesiton instead of us just assuming what's being asked. – Roger Pate Jun 10 '10 at 20:24

How do I promote my photographs?
added by Robert Harvey Jun 1 '10 at 23:53
link
Marketing is an important aspect of professional photopgraphy, and this isn't a generic marketing question - methods to promote photographs are very different from marketing other products for a variety of reasons. I wouldn't want to see marketing questions on here all the time, but specific tips that are only relevant to photography (ie you can't replace "photographs" with some other product/service and get the same answers) should be allowed. – Adam Davis Jun 3 '10 at 2:46
I think rephrasing this as "How do you promote your photographs?" might be a bit more subjective but could generate more useful answers – wweicker Jun 3 '10 at 20:06

A more generic question wouldn't become dated with the next generation of similar cameras. – Michael McCarty Jun 2 '10 at 5:20
Should be OK because while the question and answers would age, the content would remain valid. Without being model specific answers would all become wrong within months. – Richard Jun 2 '10 at 10:07
Not a shopping site. – Roger Pate Jun 3 '10 at 0:44

Close as subjective - please determine the features you are most interested in and visit dpreview to determine if either camera fits your needs better. – Adam Davis Jun 3 '10 at 2:43
This would quickly become obsolete, and is only concerning the specific equipment. – chills42 Jun 16 '10 at 17:46

classy Michael, classy... ;-) "well the way I got your girlfriend to pose naked for me was...." ;-) etc... etc... – Eoin Campbell Jun 2 '10 at 14:38
I'm surprised nobody asked this already. A classic photography question that's usually off topic. – Michael McCarty Jun 2 '10 at 15:01
