Way Too general? This answer can vary wildly in form and content. – George Jun 2 '10 at 11:13

@George: I think you're right, you'd probably have to charge consultancy for the amount of information necessary to answer this completely. :-) – Ti M Jun 4 '10 at 10:47
I think so :P This can be achieved in tons of ways, even without GIS. – George Jun 5 '10 at 6:08

Rather in StackOverflow, as it is programming related. I would add a link in the GIS-SE to some specific tags in SO. – malach Jun 2 '10 at 13:44
I agree - this is very much a computer science question. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've seen this on StackOverflow. Certainly relevant to GIS, but not there are many people on SO who aren't doing GIS work who would have valuable input on this question. – Matt Parker Jun 2 '10 at 23:32
It's computer science but relies on spatial knowledge. I don't see how you can exclusively categorize it one way or another. – dmbrubac Jun 4 '10 at 17:15
I think a better question would be: In PostGIS/ArcGIS/OGR/whatever specific GIS toolset, how do I select all points in a polygon – fmark Jun 5 '10 at 2:14
Not exclusively, no. But someone who knew a lot about algorithms and nothing about GIS could answer this, whereas people who spend a lot of time with GIS might not have a clue about how to do this. – Matt Parker Jun 5 '10 at 2:16
