@Andrew, I'm not saying there's no legitimacy to your question. I'm not even trying to suggest that stoning doesn't happen in Shari'a law. But without reference to which country differentiates the kind of stoning for men or for women as you mention, the question remains wildly over-general. Because even among countries that use stoning as capital punishment, i'm sure there's debate about how it should be used. When you add that you heard about it in Iran, then an Iranian can tell you, "yes this is true/false and it's because of xyz". – Ramy Dec 1 '10 at 22:10

You must mean polygyny. Polygamy, per se, is not permitted in Islam. – Subhani Mar 20 '11 at 1:20

Asking why with respect to religion is not usually a good approach. Better rephrased 'does Islam permit...' – apoorv020 May 8 '11 at 9:29
