Launched Q&A site for launched Q&A site for enthusiasts and power users of Apple hardware and software

Doesn't this have a large crossover with Super User? A lot of the questions about use of the desktop/laptop hardware and software are certainly Super User questions. It's really only for the iPhone, iPad and iPod questions that aren't allowed on Super User. – ChrisF May 27 '10 at 13:40
8
The only Apple questions that can't be answered are the ones on their mobile devices (iPod, iPhone or iPad). These would probably benefit more from a generic gadgets site (like AskAboutGadgets.com) as opposed to SlideToAsk/ForceClose. It also keeps the same analogy within the sites, where developers and users are separated somewhat. Yet I think that the SO team doesn't mind if we get separate sub-groups, as long as they have a strong community... – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 16:52
14
this site is unnecessary. Super User handles the Apple PCs and networking equipment, Server Fault the servers, and the gadget site would handle everything else (iPod/iPhone/iPad/Apple TV). – quack quixote May 29 '10 at 23:22

Running Android on iPhone/iPad/iPod touch?
added by Adam Davis May 27 '10 at 3:38
link
2
Out of curiosity, why not? It's Apple hardware, and no different than questions about setting up bootcamp to run windows 7, or parallels to run windows software. – Adam Davis May 27 '10 at 16:14
I'm voting yes just to annoy Apple fanboys with my Google fanboyism – Ivo Flipse May 28 '10 at 6:33
I'm ) ( that close to trying android on my touch. Yes to this one. – philcolbourn May 28 '10 at 9:50

Too localized, IMHO. That is, very temporal and locale-specific. – John Rudy May 27 '10 at 13:20

Stupid Mac OS X tricks?

This discussion would go on forever.... – Tyler Carter May 27 '10 at 3:46
Maybe an easter egg type of question, but like @Chacha102 said, it could on forever. – Troggy May 27 '10 at 4:56
It can always be a community question. – Martín Marconcini May 27 '10 at 8:39
1
Definitely on-topic. There are thousands of questions like this over on stackoverflow. Stupid inane 'fun' questions that are very relevant to the forum topic and may occasionally through up a valuable gem of knowledge. – Kirk Broadhurst May 27 '10 at 11:10

speculation, there's no "right" answer, it's just discussion – Kyle Cronin May 27 '10 at 5:17
The "answers" to this question would be like reading the forums over at MacRumors. – Troggy May 27 '10 at 5:19
I'd be interested in people's views. This sort of question will get the people that think about the market and others that know something about the market interested. Vote YES. – philcolbourn May 27 '10 at 10:13
There are tons of subjective questions like this over on stackoverflow. They can be annoying but people seem to feel there is value there. It's on topic. – Kirk Broadhurst May 27 '10 at 11:03
Unless someone makes an analysis like Anandtech.com does or something, I don't think I would care about opinions that much ;-) – Ivo Flipse May 28 '10 at 6:25

What are good games running on Mac OS X?
added by Gnoupi, edited by WikiSpeedia hang-around Jun 4 '10 at 20:51
link
Careful, it's a trap. If you open the game "valve" (hoho), it's hard to close. The fact that there are less games on OS X is not really a good reason enough to allow such questions, in my opinion. – Gnoupi May 27 '10 at 8:16
Perhaps the title is the trap. “what are good games” is subjective. What’s good for you might not be good for me. But the question is somehow valid given that the Mac still has not a lot of titles (despite Valve and all that). So you really have a small choice today. – Martín Marconcini May 27 '10 at 8:37
Gaming in general is, I think. If you open to this, you open to that as well. – Gnoupi May 27 '10 at 8:43

How do I reset my MobileMe password?

I struggle to think of this as a 'power user' or pro question. Belongs on MobileMe FAQ page or support forums. – Stu Thompson May 27 '10 at 9:38

I'm not sure you need to be limited to power user questions, you just need to prioritize them, so those users are there. – Jaydles May 28 '10 at 3:26

subjective and argumentative – Kyle Cronin May 27 '10 at 5:45

When will the Apple Store offer movies and television in Switzerland?
added by Stu Thompson May 27 '10 at 6:16
link
1
If it would be: Why can't I download movies or tv shows from the Apple Store in Switzerland? it's probably better suited. This way no one will be able to give a correct answer, while the other one is answered by referring to copyright laws and lincenses. – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 6:30
Fair enough. Unfortunately, I cannot edit proposed questions. :( Have submitted bug report. – Stu Thompson May 27 '10 at 6:36
No, don't change it, else we would only have questions that are on-topic ;-) It's just to say that the wording of the question might make it off-topic – Ivo Flipse May 28 '10 at 6:37

How can I download files over bittorrent onto my Apple TV?
added by Rog May 27 '10 at 6:53
link
I know there are legit uses for bittorrent, but I don't know of any way to legally download media over BT. The asker likely is asking for assistance to commit piracy – Kyle Cronin May 27 '10 at 22:40
2
Wow, funny given SO uses bittorrent to distribute its own legal content! I know how to legally download media over BT, just because you don't doesn't imply my intent. The question is worded with no such reference to intent nor the type of content. What if I asked the exact same question replacing bittorrent with http? They are just enabling protocols, enabling piracy as much as a pen enables the distribution of hate speech. – Rog May 28 '10 at 2:38
1
@photographr.info Yes, I know there are legit uses for torrents (linux ISOs are a classic example), but the reality is that the vast majority of content playable on an Apple TV that's downloaded over bittorrent is done so illegally. If the asker made it clear that they were getting legal content, then it's absolutely on topic. – Kyle Cronin May 28 '10 at 3:08
Fair enough. Apologies if I sounded ranty, upon re-reading it I realised it was harsher than I intended. :) – Rog May 28 '10 at 3:32

When are the new models of <some apple hardware/software> coming out?
added by Juan A. Navarro May 27 '10 at 10:56

This would be a discussion, which is usually a big no-no on the Stack Exchange sites. We should be focused on the Q&A format. – alex May 27 '10 at 14:27
Unless it can be backed up with an official press release from Apple, there would be a lot of guess work involved, and it can get localised as Apple normally only release in specific countries. – Diago May 27 '10 at 18:02
Might be a good question to attract leaks and people interested in Mac rumours - to build community. – philcolbourn May 28 '10 at 10:03
