Launched Q&A site for launched Q&A site for enthusiasts and power users of Apple hardware and software

Doesn't this have a large crossover with Super User? A lot of the questions about use of the desktop/laptop hardware and software are certainly Super User questions. It's really only for the iPhone, iPad and iPod questions that aren't allowed on Super User. – ChrisF May 27 '10 at 13:40
8
The only Apple questions that can't be answered are the ones on their mobile devices (iPod, iPhone or iPad). These would probably benefit more from a generic gadgets site (like AskAboutGadgets.com) as opposed to SlideToAsk/ForceClose. It also keeps the same analogy within the sites, where developers and users are separated somewhat. Yet I think that the SO team doesn't mind if we get separate sub-groups, as long as they have a strong community... – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 16:52
14
this site is unnecessary. Super User handles the Apple PCs and networking equipment, Server Fault the servers, and the gadget site would handle everything else (iPod/iPhone/iPad/Apple TV). – quack quixote May 29 '10 at 23:22

There's a photoshop for Mac OSX. – jayhawk Jun 5 '10 at 5:09
GIMP, it's free and open source. There is also Seashore which is made using Cocoa, so you do not need X11 for it. – Mark Szymanski Jun 14 '10 at 21:24

Pixelmator! It's really nifty and has nice GUI. Made entirely in Cocoa and uses GPU for image processing. – Eimantas Jun 18 '10 at 15:28

How can I unbrick a bricked iPhone?
added by Stu Thompson May 27 '10 at 6:52
link
Or 'Can I ask questions that are blatantly dodgy'? I vote 'no'. – Stu Thompson May 27 '10 at 6:53
2
If you paid for it you should be free to do what you want with it. Stick it in a blender, microwave it, or jail-break it. Vote Yes. – philcolbourn May 27 '10 at 10:41
1
unbricking != jail-braking. To "brick" is to remotely render a phone unusable, like after it is lost or stolen. Someone interested in 'un-bricking' a phone very possibly is dodgy. – Stu Thompson May 27 '10 at 10:44
2
Actually, bricking can occur when you update your firmware yourself and something goes wrong. You can "brick" your iphone in any number of ways yourself. The problem here is what people consider the definition of 'bricking' to be, and the reality is that it doesn't always indicate theft or illegal usage. Perhaps you jailbroke the phone incorrectly and bricked it, or you jailbroke it and ran untrusted apps on it which bricked it, or you attempted to load android on it and bricked it. The bottom line is: How does one reload the firmware when the main phone OS is gone. – Adam Davis May 27 '10 at 13:53
@Adam Davis : Interesting. I did not know that. My intent was to suggest a dodgy question. :P – Stu Thompson May 27 '10 at 17:09

added by Chris W. Rea May 27 '10 at 3:19

For a site dedicated to the Apple community, many of which are, er "enthusiastic" about Apple, this question would only raise a significant ruckus. Further, it may attract unwanted cease and desist attention. – Adam Davis May 27 '10 at 3:30
2
Adam may be right but some Apple users want the freedom to do what they choose to do with the hardware they have bought and the software they use. – philcolbourn May 27 '10 at 9:45
@philcolbourn This is unfortunately a potential legal issue. Good question but needs to be removed. – Kirk Broadhurst May 27 '10 at 11:02
1
It raises the question of whether information on how to do something is illegal, or is it the act of doing it. For example, I can tell you how to steal from a store, but that's protected speech. I don't feel like the info itself is illegal...albeit if people were discussion how to make bombs on the guns & ammo Stack Exchange site, that would be not allowed, so my gut tells me this should be not allowed as well. – Michael Pryor May 27 '10 at 15:26
1
Best to avoid any hints to things that are illegal somewhere, simply to prevent people from asking these questions over and over – Ivo Flipse May 28 '10 at 6:32

I'd have to expect that most of the questions on this site would be just fine on SuperUser; personally I wouldn't vote for it. – Craig Walker May 27 '10 at 3:18
@Craig overlap is OK – Kyle Cronin May 27 '10 at 3:23

I think an apple dedicated site would work better for that user base than superuser, as discussed here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/5840/… – Jaydles May 27 '10 at 3:59

@Kyle Overlap is one thing, but this would drive all Apple related questions away from the community, thus weakening it. – alex May 27 '10 at 14:02

This one, like the OSX on non-apple hardware, skirts an ethical dilemma line that this site may not want to get near. Apple has acted against some sites that post such information, and it's easily obtained using Google, so I don't see a good reason to allow it. – Adam Davis May 27 '10 at 3:35
2
But why do I have to run Apple software on the hardware I paid for? I want to run Android because that is the viable option if I want to have the freedom to run apps that Apple block. I love the hardware but Apple's proprietary behaviour is starting to annoy and concern me. I vote for freedom. – philcolbourn May 27 '10 at 9:51
@philcolbourn Apple says you do, and is prepared to take legal action to enforce their position. I think Adam raises a valid point. The question is on topic but unfortunately should probably be removed for legal reasons. – Kirk Broadhurst May 27 '10 at 11:00
3
I think this should be allowed, as jailbreaking (despite what Apple wants you to think) is not illegal. However, any questions about using jailbreaking to commit piracy should be immediately closed. – Kyle Cronin May 27 '10 at 15:27
1
There are many countries where the DMCA has no legal authority and the only warning I have read is of breaking warranty. I see no ethical dilemma with this question. Perhaps a moral issue if you believe religiously in whatever Apple Decrees. – marsofearth Jun 2 '10 at 5:54
